Me upon first moving to northern NY: Haha, it’s so funny that people are bitter about Lake Champlain not being labeled as a Great Lake!
Me now: *one of the people bitter that Lake Champlain is not considered a Great Lake*
Like, yeah, it’s not as deep as the Great Lakes, but it has a mud bottom that just eats things, and we don’t know how far down the mud goes. Ships have gone missing in the lake to never be found. Projects around the lake sometimes unearth parts of ships and cannons that have sunken into the mud. The mud is an unknowable, frightening depth. There are parts of the lake where you can die from hypothermia in the middle of summer, which can get to 100 degrees F for us! The lake creates its own extreme weather and constant wind currents that never really let up! A normal day is like, 10mph for wind. Sometimes we just get random windstorms with wind between 40–65mph. Hanging clothes outside is a dumb thing to do around here because of that. Shit needs to be nailed down if it’s outside!
But basically, I now have a deep respect for Lake Champlain. Respect the lake, and just maybe the monster won’t get you.
