Luke is sixteen standard cycles (which is twelve-and-eight-ninths, under the Tatooine suns) when Owen gives him a speeder.
It’s not a working speeder, to be clear. It’s a hunk of metal and misfiring circuits and an empty space where the thermo drive should be. The coupler is made of plasticene and it’s melted from blowback, since the exhaust fan is also broken. It’s little bit more than the vague shape of a speeder, and parts he’ll have to replace.
“To teach you responsibility,” Owen says gruffly.
Luke loves it. He loves it immediately, and names it Sandwalker, or ‘Sandy’ for short (he’s sixteen-or-twelve, give him a break) and he loves it with a passion he’d otherwise reserve for Kiata Redsun, or stories about his father, or flying more generally. (‘Skywalker’ isn’t a joke, it’s a descriptor.)
“He’s named the thing before it even works,” Owen says, and Beru laughs. “He’s your nephew,” she says, and Owen can’t argue with that.
Luke devotes himself to it the way he devotes himself to everything else. He’s almost finished, almost remade it completely, parts replaced piece by piece, until—

For his sixteenth birthday, Luke gives Ben power converters. “Uh,” Luke’s nephew says, palming the slim grey boxes. “Thank you?”
“Just in case,” Luke says, and Ben gives him a funny look. Luke wishes this wasn’t such a common occurrence.
(What Luke Skywalker doesn’t know: somewhere, in the bowels of Kylo Ren’s personal shuttle, there is a row of neat black-and-red power converters stamped with a First Order seal. But there, at the back—two greyish blocky converters, with awkward, badly-cut edges, and LS carved into the casing.)
