You Are Only Human Pt 1 (Shimada Angst)
Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 Part 5 Part 6
"No." The two Shimada brothers stated in firm unison once the order was given. Being on a mission together against their own will was frustrating enough, but now, Morrison wanted them to do what?
"You two are the only ones with enough stealth to get past Talon's defenses. We just need you to get in and get rid of the guards so the rest of the team can get inside," Soldier 76 elaborated on the plan.
"I refuse to go with him," Hanzo hissed, adding emphasis as he gestured to his so-called brother. After their fallout, Genji became a phantom, an insignificant memory of lost childhood. Just being in his presence made Hanzo boil with hatred.
Tracer sighed at their resistance. "You two don't have to stick together. Just get us inside, please. We can't allow Talon to get away with valuable weaponry."
Genji turned his back to the team and stared out of the glass door of the hovering craft. In the distance, he could see the dark quarters of Talon silhouetted against the moonlit sky. "I can go alone," he offered.
"That's too dangerous," Mercy derailed the idea quickly.
"But, my brother is so stubborn today," Genji replied, causing a glare from Hanzo.
"Hanzo, if you're going to be a part of this team, you do as I say," Soldier 76 demanded compliance.
Once all eyes fell on him, Hanzo sighed. "I understand." Resistance barely concealed itself in his voice.
"Move out," Morrison ordered.
Winston, stood by the large door, leaned on a lever mechanized to lower the door into a ramp. Genji hurried into the night, and Hanzo followed him, hoping to get the job done quickly. The coms switched on, allowing easy communication between the ninjas and the rest of the team on board the hovercraft.
"Update us on your progress," Tracer said.
"Can you give us information about Talon headquarters?" Genji asked.
"Lots of guards, of course, all armed," Winston replied. "According to this particular hideout, there are cameras, so be careful."
Careful. Hanzo and Genji trained to be careful since childhood. As assassins, one false step could be their last. They were taught to be lithe, quick, subtle. Deadly, lurking shadows.
"Multiple guards on the outside. One should be their head with an access card. That's all we need, then we move inside to retrieve the weaponry," Winston continued.
"Understood." Genji affirmed.
Secluded on a small island off the coast of South Africa, the Talon base stood as a challenge to locate from Overwatch headquarters. At a ground level, obscured by trees and rising land, the base stayed hidden. The outstanding location yearned to be applauded for, but now it failed in secrecy. What lied inside was a different story. Stolen armory that would give Talon an upper hand in rising tensions of the world was always a worthy mission.
The brothers came to a large boundary of gate. Quickly judging the situation, they discovered that the wires were live with electricity. Luckily, no operatives patrolled the fence.
"Try to keep up," Genji murmured, a smirk concealed beneath the mask as he leaped over the fence and landed gracefully in a crouched position, thanks to his enhanced mobility as a cyborg.
Hanzo huffed. He looked over his shoulder at a tree, then climbed it, using the height to also make it over the electric gate.
Lying beyond the border of fence was a courtyard, then Talon's base, infested by guards. Some at ground level, others on the rooftop or wandering the catwalk that connected two areas of the building together then passing through archways into the interior. Hanzo and Genji kept silent and concealed.
"Camera," Genji uttered, pointing towards the large, heavily guarded, door of the quarters. "Take it out."
Hanzo immediately saw the flaw in the plan. How typical of his brother to not think ahead. "No. Whoever is monitoring the cameras would see one went down, and the guards would be alerted. We must avoid its range."
Bested, Genji nodded. "How about the guards?"
Hanzo scoffed. "Target practice. Take the ones by the door. I'll handle the ones up top,"
"That's a handful, brother. Are you sure you can handle them all?" Genji teased, then darted to the wall of the base, picking up a stone on the way.
Hanzo waited, silently withdrawing an arrow from his quiver. The cyborg tossed the stone, and the thud sent one guard's paranoia into high as he set out to locate the noise. Once around the corner, Genji grabbed him and suffocated him with his hand. The muffled struggles caused another guard to leave post.
The weariness below happened to bother the guards upon the roof and catwalk. Hanzo hurried to an unloaded haul of boxes and peered around, striking a straying guard on the roof. He then took out the second operative who accompanied him. Genji busied himself with strangling another guard.
Turning to those on the catwalk, now aware of their attackers, Hanzo fired a scatter arrow. One fell, another wounded, the third attempted to call back up. Hanzo aimed and disengaged the one calling for help, then shot the injured one.
Genji finished his final guard, who was the only one left standing, with a few shuriken to his chest. Familiarity swarmed the air between the brothers.
"Just like old times, brother," Genji jeered, admiring their work.
"Yes," Hanzo replied, recalling their handiwork in Hanamura as assassins in training. "Now, who is the head of these worthless targets?"
"Let us search them," Genji said, then pressed a finger to his com. "We have taken out the guards and are currently searching for the head,"
"Well done." Soldier 76 said,"Return to the craft once you have the access card. We'll regroup and engage."
"Very well," Genji replied, kneeling down to one of the fallen guards and searching for the desired card.
Hanzo climbed the wall of the base to the catwalk and scavenged the operatives. No card. He moved on to the roof. Again, no card. Peering over the ledge at Genji, he saw his brother was also out of luck.
"How strange," Genji said. "Winston, we don't seem to have a card on any of the guards,"
"Maybe he's inside," Winston theorized, then hummed in thought. "Return to the craft, we'll discuss a new plan to get in."
"There seems to be a way to get in from the catwalks," Genji mentioned.
"There might be a way to open the door from the inside for the rest of the team," Hanzo added.
"Try it out," Soldier 76 replied.
Genji scaled the wall to the catwalk and approached one of the archways. To his liking, it led to the interior of the base.
"There is a way in," Genji reported.
"That's great, Genji. If the coast is clear, enter the base and attempt to find a way to get the main door open. If there is, report back to the craft," Winston ordered.
"Understood,"
Hanzo prepared to hop down to the catwalk as well, but he stopped once footsteps approached from the archway opposite of Genji. He held his breath and motioned to his brother, who did not seem to realize the immediate danger. What caught Genji's attention was the steps on metal, and once he turned to engage in battle, a lookout tossed a small device at him and held up his rifle for protection.
The contraption latched itself onto Genji's arm, which threw itself up in defense at the approaching sentinels. Screams split the cool, night air. Flowing rapidly over his body in blinding streaks of white, electricity crippled the cyborg. Hanzo gazed in horror as Genji collapsed, unconscious, then took a careful step back on the roof to not meet a similar fate.
"Take him in for questioning. Disarm him." One of the guards said, who Hanzo assumed was the leader, and the other two grabbed the unconscious Genji and dragged him into the base.
"Genji? Genji, report." Winston asked hurriedly.
"Hanzo, what's going on over there?" Soldier 76 questioned.
"Genji's communicator is offline," Tracer said.
Hanzo kept quiet. The remaining guard glanced around at the carnage the ninjas left behind. He feared that the head operative would hear his heart drumming out of his chest. If he turned around, Hanzo was doomed.
"I can't get a read on Genji's vitals, all his systems are offline!" Mercy cried into her mic.
Shaking his head, the operative returned to the interior of the base. Hanzo exhaled, slowly. Still on edge, he lifted a finger to his ear piece.
"Genji was captured by Talon." He uttered, a familiar feeling washing over him as his throat tightened.
"What? Hanzo, disengage and return to the craft, now!" Soldier 76 commanded, and Hanzo was already over the fence and hurrying back to the team in the cool night as memories from years ago resurfaced to remind him of that terrible feeling; guilt.
