I drew this for a comic art demo at Blick in Portland earlier today. Total elapsed worktime: three hours. Hour one was pencils, hours two and three were inks and the little bit of coloring I realized they expected me to do. It was fun by the ton. People would come by and ask me questions. A lot of interested prepubescents, which was delightful. "Did you have to look up what their helmets looked like?" You bet your ass I did, eleven year-old kid.
This page depicts a very fanciful version of the first contact between the Romans and my own ancestors, the Venedi, who would go on to become the Wends. The Venedi were pagan barbarians who, as far as I can tell, didn't really have very much going for them outside of being notoriously difficult to get along with. The (highly speculatively colored) image I used as reference for the man in this comic:
And the designs I amalgamated to create the woman:
Anyway, the idea of the elitist, technologically advanced Roman centurions running into a couple of contrary, passive-aggressive barbarians was amusing to me. The demo provided an excuse.
I like writing these two. The Venedi ran into the Vikings and the Huns, too, you know. Something to keep in the chamber.
Thanks to everyone who came out today. Hope y'all stayed dry.
