Nathan’s telepathy is not what it used to be. A few short years ago he was one of the most powerful telepaths alive – if not the most powerful, capable of global telepathy that allowed him to hear the thoughts of almost every mind on the planet. But that was then. Now he strains to read the minds of the two men at the back of the bar over the racket inside. It’s Happy Hour and this bar is the only one for miles, and to be situated in the middle of absolute nowhere it’s attracting patrons like flies on shit.
Concluding that the pair are just idiots and have neither the capability nor thegumption to actually act on their discussed threats, he reaches for his beer without looking and takes a long drink. As soon as he swallows he realizes that this isn’t his drink and he stares down at the glass in his hand, as if his tongue was somehow mistaken. It’s not beer.
Well, shit. His fault for not paying attention. Cable frowns in chagrin – at himself. That was sloppy. An amateur mistake, one that hopefully doesn’t come back to bite him in the ass. He was trying not to draw attention to himself– which was difficult enough when he towered over most of the other bargoers–with his metal arm obscured by his gloves and his coat.
“Wasn’t paying attention. Grabbed your drink by mistake.” Trying to look apologetic, Nathan turns towards the woman sitting beside him, gesturing with his chin to the drink in his hand. With the other he gets the bartender’s attention. “I’ll get you another.”
