MRS. VERA ROE

wife of Pfc. Eugene Roe, who is now in Holland with American paratroopers. Mrs. Roe was the former Vera Hunt of Swindon, Wiltshire, England. The marriage took place in England in June of this year.

Mrs. Eugene Roe Arrives Here From England:

We wish to welcome to our community Mrs. Eugene Roe, the former Miss Vera Hunt of Swindon, England, who arrived here last Sunday, April 7th. Mrs. Roe arrived in the States last week aboard the QUEEN MARY.

Her husband, until his discharge sometime in January, was a Sergeant in the Army Paratroopers. Sgt. Roe saw overseas duty in England, France, Belgium, Austria, Holland, and Germany and was a member of the 101st Army Paratroopers, 506th Division which was at Bastogne during the "Battle of the Bulge". He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward M. Roe of this city.

In reality, Roe was married at the time, having just tied the knot with his fiancee, Vera, during a furlough to Great Britain. The cautious Englishwoman had made up a name -- Maxine -- when she first met the American serviceman. It caused some confusion when he later arrived at her house asking for the non-existent Maxine. The two would later give the name to their first child.
