Main Cast Introductions: Veratrix

Veratrix is next! Hatched into the captivity of apes, she was kept as a ‘pet’ by a family of akin to ‘nobility’, mostly for the entertainment of their son. As she grew bigger, she became more of a glorified guard, keeping the poor from their lands. The son she lavished much of her affections on to went to war one day, and never returned - and though she waited for him, his family never dared tell her.

Eventually, after years of neglect, she overheard two apes talking about the loss of the estate’s boy and broke free. She burnt the place to the ground in her grief, and flew north, over the sea and into draconic territory. Catalysta found her, injured and weak, and took her in; mending her wounds, and her broken heart.

She went on to help heal Nix when she arrived, and the two are very close; closer than Veratrix knows how to express. She is known for her massive size and her gentle disposition. She is bilingual, speaking both common Ape-tongue and Draconic.

And thus, Smaugust draws to a close. Thank you so much for all your support, encouragement and compliments. I promise I’ll still be doing art - perhaps not as frequently, but I have some adoptables in the works and there’ll still be plenty of doodles to do. I’m also interested in doing some more drawn replies to asks, so the more you send in the more likely I’ll get round to drawing them!

Veratrix! Help! I need a recipe that would send a crowd of a flavor journey!

Veratrix: Oh my, a crowd? How many? Do you need a royal feast of some sorts? Well, I’d advise going with a large piece of meat as your centrepiece - Depending on what you’re using, you want to cook long and low temperature for very fatty meats, remember! And never cook lean meats for too long because they go horribly tough and chewy. It entirely depends on what you want to go for when it comes to the rub or marinade to use. My personal tastes prefer smokey, sweet flavours; using things like honey and smoked paprika are a must when it comes to my cooking!

If you want to fill a table, though, you’ll need more than just meats. I find that roasted fruits and nuts make for good nibbles if your guests are the grazing type, but other earthy vegetables are a great way to fill the bellies of hungry travellers! Take a selection of them and boil them lightly until they’re just starting to go soft, then roll them in rosemary, salt and pepper and roast them well until they’re crispy. You want to roast them in fat, though - you get the best results if you heat it first before you put the veggies in, but do be careful when you drop them in because it’s inclined to spit like crazy.

After all that, you want a nice sugary treat to send them off! Pineapple is a perfect ending to a great day. You only want to caramelise it lightly, not for too long - just until they’re looking a little like they’re glazed with liquid gold. Serve them with something cold, like some kind of cream, and maybe some fruity, syrupy goodness to give it a nice punch - be sure to just drizzle it on though! Unless you know your guests like the feeling of their teeth falling out!

Veratrix’s ref sheet was bugging me and I was really unhappy with her proportions and her overall look, so I redrew her AGAIN and now I’m much happier!

Main changes are to her markings and her wings now have a claw! I hope you like her new design :3
