“My ensemble was an ode to James Baldwin ... What we agreed upon pretty immediately was using that as the inspiration, but really wanting to steer clear front of cosplaying someone and thinking about how do we play with subtle gestures. So it’s as simple as the way my scarf is tied, which is something that Baldwin did frequently rather than formal ties and the way his suiting would fall on him or his shearling coats that he would wear really became those sources of inspiration. ... I think Baldwin also feels fitting for this theme because he is so connected to the social and political black tradition that even Dandyism comes from, which is how do we use these tools and these aesthetics that in many ways were used to exclude black people and take them in as a source to be able to write in our own stories, to write our own inclusion, to draw ourselves a seat at the proverbial table.” (x)
