quick disclaimer post!
hi guys. this came from a conversation I had with a really awesome group of fans earlier, but I thought it was important to talk about.
I used to have another name and blog on tumblr. I won’t link to it, but it’s pretty easy to find within the fandom. I was very young at the time and even though I thought most of the jokes I was making were harmless and nonsensical (actually a lot of them are) — there was one in particular that really blew up. “Always great to drug your kids” was a huge meme that I perpetuated back in 2012-2013 or so.
I’m not excusing anything I’ve done, but please bear in mind that at that time, I was young, social media (especially tumblr) was very new, and we all didn’t really think about consequences or lasting impact it might have, especially to real people. Willemijn also had a much smaller fandom then on tumblr and it was pretty easy to just get caught up in our own silly little corner of the internet. I was just a hyper, naive kid having fun on the Internet. I had no idea that the joke would blow up so much in the future, and that people new to the fandom would find my blog, and still quote it years later.
I’ve also heard that people are asking willemijn herself about the joke. Of course, she wouldn’t even remember saying it, and that’s a big yikes. Out of context it’s not a good joke and in the wrong ears could require a lot of explaining. Willemijn doesn’t deserve that. But again, those people who have gone to her are most likely young people who, like me, don’t know better, and who have taken from my past example. (Though of course I would have never gone to Willemijn herself with any of my dumb memes)
The point of this post is that I nowadays do not have access to delete my old content, the old clowning I did, memes using real peoples faces, etc. And I truly do regret that, because it’s public and up for everyone to see.
So all I can ask is this: that we please put the joke to rest. I genuinely see the error of my ways and wish I could remove it from the internet, but all I can do is try to move forward and make my views known about it now.
And take it as a good lesson: think about what you post, because your weird stuff from when you were a kid is public on social media. We are in a unique era!
Anyway, thank you everyone — basically, please don’t take any of that old content seriously and especially don’t take it to Willemijn herself.
