19. “Can I hold your hand?”

You’re going home from a house party, and it’s dark and you’re cold. Your house is only three blocks away, and you walked to the party, because you figured it wasn’t worth driving to, and you didn’t want to drink and drive.

Wrapping your hands around yourself, you shiver, regretting rejecting someone’s offer to walk you home. You didn’t know his name, but he was cute and in your slightly tipsy state, you didn’t want to embarrass yourself in front of him.

“Hey!” Someone calls out from behind you, and you freeze on the pavement, slight worry creeping into your mind.

“Please don’t be a kidnapper,” you chant softly under your breath as you turn around, expecting the worst.

It surprises you when you recognise the boy from earlier, the one who offered to take you home.

“I’m Vernon,” he says cheerfully, giving you a wide grin when he walks over to you.

“Um...hi?” You ask uncertainly, eyeing him carefully.

“I don’t think you should be walking home alone this late, and plus,” he takes off his jacket to place it gently over your shoulders. “You look like you need it more than I do.”

You offer a shy smile, and he gestures for you to continue walking. “Why’re you walking alone, anyway?”

“My best friend’s with her boyfriend, and I don’t want to be a third wheel,” you admit.

“I know the feeling, my friends came with dates too,” he kicks at a stone on the ground.

“We should band together. We’ll be the dateless club,” you joke, laughing softly.

He laughs with you, and his laughter is nice, it’s bright and childlike, and it makes you want to laugh even more.

“Well, we don’t have to be.”

Turning to face him, you raise an eyebrow. He lets out a small cough.

“What I mean is,” he turns to face you. “Can I hold your hand?”
