It isn’t everyday that you get called to play for the national team. Not like it is a surprise for Maria, it’s not, but it’s still nice. Not everyone gets the call even if they clearly deserve it, so she does feel validated. It’s new for her too and she’s excited about getting to play with everyone she’s played against, only one being a teammate. Getting to actually know them better. See how they work together instead of against each other. And then she sees Carol Danvers’ face and realizes she’s the only one excited about the prospect of working together. Shit.
“Danvers,” she still says. Friendly. She even smiles.
