DANVERS
maria doesn’t walk, forcing carol to do a double take. with the ball trapped under one cleated foot and her brows furrowed, she hesitates, gives maria a quick once over as if that would magically reveal her intentions and answer all questions. “no, thanks. i’m good.” maria’s signature smile is bright enough for both of them and carol cannot possibly fathom why she would bother sticking around. the rest of their teammates make for some perfectly adequate company if that’s what you’re into and she’s done her part by coming over to say hello. it’s not that carol is a bad team player either - she wouldn’t have gotten to where she is, if she was - but she loathes inaction. it makes her restless and anxious; everything she does is geared towards getting her to where she wants to go, towards proving to everyone that she deserves to be here. and standing around on a soccer field talking does not fit her agenda. maria’s follow up suggestion however, that’s more up her aisle. “okay, yeah. sure. i don’t see why not.” she shrugs, indifferently, easily passing the ball to maria and waiting for her to take the lead.
maria had expected that answer, but she also hopes carol will change her mind. somehow. if she doesn’t, it’ll be a long terrible month of them training together. she’s one of the best players they have and they need to be cohesive. she’s not about to let her spend all her time alone, that’s not conductive to a good team. her suggestion manages to convince her, though and maria’s smile grows even wider. “cool,” is all she says. she receives the ball easily enough and then moves somewhere where they won’t bother anyone if they get out of control. which can happen if maria knows anything about the woman in front of her. “do you want to run while we pass?” she asks, already moving to one side and passing the ball back to carol.
