Survivor
After his final battle with his long term enemy Obi-wan Kenobi, the injured ex-sith lord found himself staring in the face of failure yet again. Death was near--or so he thought. Despite every part of his body fighting against him, despite ignoring brainwashed instinct and engraved mannerisms--Maul allowed himself to release his hatred. As he closed his eyes and began to accept his fate, simple words left his lips. "Leave me Kenobi, leave me to die. It is the least you can do." It wasn't but moments later that the old sith was overcome with a vivid vision of the future. "Show me, Grandfather, and I will finish what you started." Such words echoed throughout his mind until he could barely take it. Even in his mere vision he could feel the sheer tearing of the dark side of the force. It was strong--just like he had seen before in Vader. There was pain, agony, and hatred beyond belief. Perhaps of himself, perhaps of the world around him. That wasn't important to him. As Kenobi left, Maul made a choice--a choice he had made once before. Now wasn't the time to die, for he had a bloodline to exterminate. No matter how long that would take, it would be done. For Vader was the cause of his loss, not Kenobi. All this time he had turned a blind eye to his replacement, blaming Kenobi for even letting it happen in the first place. Now the truth was clear--everything was clear. Extermination had always been his destiny. Now was his time to shine once more.
Blood Hunter
After all the time Maul spent on Mandalore, his fate began to change. Once a man who wanted nothing more than do bring down those who had wronged him--his ways changed, only slightly. No longer seeking just one final battle to rest his hatred and bitterness, Maul began gathering all the intel he could on Darth Vader and Obi-wan Kenobi. From there he started following their tracks, attempting to take down everyone that had even mild association with Obi-wan and Darth Vader. While being force sensitive is ultimately helpful, since becoming one with the Mandalorian people, he’s since ditched his saber and picked up a blaster. The people of Mandalore are considered his brothers, they fight or die trying. Ever since opening up his heart to a new walk of life Maul has since started embracing his feelings a bit more. Not much can break him away from the bitter abuse that sith teachings cursed him with--but he tries day by day to break from being a sith and just being a man--a warrior.
Of Ren
Taking place around the time of TFA and TLJ, Maul gets a vision of Snoke and the Knights of Ren before his supposedly untimely battle with Obi-wan Kenobi. This vision leads him to believe he will have a purpose once again, that he will be part of the rise of darkness over the galaxy. Little does he know that the leader of the Knights of Ren was going to be the ancestor of Vader himself. For years Maul falls back into his aggressive habits of training, he searches the galaxy for answers, joins the first order, and finally feels as though he has found his place in the world. Even though he is unsatisfied with his position and wishes to become an Elite Praetorian Guard, Maul is unsure if such a thing is possible.
Secret Sith
Before the events of the Phantom Menace, Qui-Gon Jinn is a secret sith, an apprentice to Darth Sidious that is meant to seduce the supposed chosen one to the dark side of the force. From the start Sidious questioned where Qui-Gon’s heart truly rested, for the light in him seemed to overpower the dark. He felt like more of a grey jedi than he did his apprentice. It was in his reign of doubt that Sidious discovered the child that would become Darth Maul. Training him to become obedient, to never flinch when he struck him--to never shrink away when he was shocked or punished, Maul became the perfect Jedi hunter. Sidious had to admit only to himself that he had gone too far in training Maul, for even he didn’t possess such a powerful hatred for the Jedi. Now was the time to let Maul and Qui-Gon both know there was another. How was it going to end? Sidious was eager to find out.
Rebel Scum
After the death of Savage, Maul had a change of heart--the hatred in his heart was completely drowned out by heart break. He couldn’t take any more--for the losses he had endured were far too great for him to deal with alone anymore. Without hesitation he retreated and slowly started to work his way into the rebellion. Not as a hero, not as a character in the spotlight--but a man gathering intel from the enemy lines he had known since his childhood.
