c/b; had sex after Flowers for your Grave
Things are awkward, afterwards.
She didn’t mean to do it, really she didn’t, but it had been such a long time. And she knows it wasn’t enough to satisfy him. Not by a long shot. A nanny is dead and there are children around and still, still, he salivates after her.
And Kate really doesn’t know what to do about it. If she listens to any part of herself except the rational portion of her brain, she’ll bring him home with her again tonight and work out her frustrations with the case and with him.
But she is a professional, and he is annoying, and she never wanted to be a notch on his bedpost.
Only, when he tries it on and she says that to him, he gets very quiet and then he kisses her cheek again, just like he did a couple of weeks ago. “So don’t be a notch, Beckett. Be at home.”
And how does she say no to that?
Can you do a Christmassy College AU?!
Part 26
It’s their first Christmas as a couple and Rick just wants to get her something special. She’s been feeling kind of down lately, with her dad relapsing and her inability to decipher her mother’s journal. He wishes he could work some kind of miracle and bring her mom back. Or maybe just solve her mother’s case for her; stop her from letting it consume her like she fears it will. But he isn’t capable of doing either of those things. And somehow, standing in the jewelry department of Macy’s nothing feels like it will ever compare.
She doesn’t need “things” she had told him when he was trying to figure out what to get her for her birthday last month. She already has a watch she never takes off and a necklace she treats as her most prized possession. No, jewelry is the wrong thing. But then what can he get her?
Rick leaves the department store empty handed. He finds himself aimlessly wandering around the city blocks until he ends up in front of the city library. Johanna Beckett’s murder is still on his mind and he finds himself wondering if he could find any newspaper clippings on the event in the archives. Or maybe he’d have better luck running an internet search on one of their computers. He just wants to find something that will help Kate. He misses that radiant smile of hers that has been lacking lately.
But as he begins his search and pulls up the first online article he finds, he quickly registers the real reason Kate has been so down lately. Her mom died right after Christmas. That must make the holiday season really difficult for her. He wonders why she’s never told him that. She seems to have shared everything else. Maybe his incessant ramblings about Christmas being his favorite holiday stopped her. She didn’t want to bring him down with her.
He knows what he wants to get her now. He wants to bring the magic back.

“Where are you taking me?” Kate grumbles, trying to see around the blindfold.
“If I told you, it wouldn’t be a surprise now would it?”
“I don’t like surprises.”
“You’ll like this one.”
He lets her walk a couple more steps before he instructs her to stop and removes the blindfold. She doesn’t say anything at first and he figures he’s rendered her speechless. The beauty of the huge tree at Rockefeller Center with the surrounding decorations and ice skating rink; it seemed like the perfect idea. The beauty of the season and a fun date all in one. But Kate doesn’t seem impressed.
“Can we go?” she asks softly.
Rick looks at her, confused. “But Kate, I thought –”
“You can stay if you want, but I’m going to go.”
She starts walking away from him and he chases after her.
“Kate, wait! What’s wrong? What’d I do?”
He jogs around in front of her to get her to stop. She has tears in her eyes, but she won’t look at him.
“Kate,” he tries again, reaching out to her. “Talk to me.”
“My mom,” she says quietly. “The Christmas before she died, she brought me here. A couple weeks later, I lost her.”
Oh. He fucked up. He fucked up big time.
“I’m sorry,” Rick breathes pulling her into a hug. “I didn’t know.”
She accepts his embrace, pressing herself against him. “It’s okay. How would you?”
“I was just trying to make the holidays special for you,” he says into her hair. “I was trying to cheer you up.”
She lifts her head up to look at him. “I’m sorry. I know you love this time of year, but I just –”
“Hey, no,” he cuts her off. “Don’t apologize. You’re allowed to hate this season. I would too if it had been me.”
“I just…I don’t think I’m ever going to stop missing her, you know? It’s hard.”
Rick squeezes her tighter, wishing he could make her pain go away. “How about we get out of here and go do the most un-Christmassy thing we can find? Like eating Chinese food and trying to find Halloween decorations on clearance.”
“It’s December. You really think some places still have Halloween stuff out?”
“Therein lies the challenge.”
She laughs at that, finally a laugh, and he starts to guide her away from Rockefeller. Perhaps it’s too soon to bring the magic back. Maybe all she really needs right now is to forget.

Thanks for the breakfast mention, I’m always looking for good breakfast/brunch places in London!
It's absolutely fantastic! Both the pancakes and the full English are wonderful, but don't make the mistake of asking for extra bacon like we did; you will never manage it!
Top 5 things to do in London!
Thanks lovely!
1) Breakfast at this place, which notabadday and I stumbled upon by sheer chance and now enthusiastically take all our friends to.
2) Wandering around Spitalfields. (And looking longingly at things I want, going "I'll maybe come back for it" and never coming back for it.)
3) Going to the Greenwich Mean Time Hill, which I kind of have to love after Jess and I spent hours trying to film a message for cordichase up there. The view of London is gorgeous, and I get more excited about the DLR than a 23-year-old woman really should.
4) Speaking of views: the London Eye. It's overpriced and somehow both over too quickly and something that makes you go "...now what?" once you're up there but I have the most vivid memory of the first time I went on it and I continue to have a soft spot for it.
5) Sitting on the South Bank on warm summer evenings would probably make the list of top things to do at all. It's become kind of a tradition for my friends and I the last three years and between the buskers and the way the Eye is lit up and the company I just feel so contented there and I really hope we can continue hanging out there at least once a year.
College AU? Please?!
Part 24
She meets him for lunch, pushes the flash drive containing Hail of Bullets his way.
“You finished it?” Rick asks, his fingers wrapping around the small device. “Already?”
“I couldn’t put it down.”
“Kate –”
“I’m serious. It’s good.”
He drops the flash drive into his pocket and reaches for her hand across the table.
“Publishable good? Or I’m just humoring my boyfriend good?”
Kate laughs, squeezing his hand. “It’s definitely publishable. And trust me. I read a lot.”
He sighs, rubbing his thumb over the back of her hand.
“Don’t you believe in your writing?” she asks.
“No, no I do. It’s just…this is the first thing I’ve ever written that I actually feel like I can get to go somewhere. This book could be my chance and I just want it to be perfect.”
“You’re too hard on yourself, Rick. Start sending it to publishers. I promise you, it’s ready.”
He shakes his head. “I’m glad that you loved it, I really am, but I think I might try to pawn it off to a couple of my English professors first.”
“Don’t do that. They’ll just tear it apart and make you doubt yourself even more.”
“I thought you said it was ready”
“Babe, you’ve said it yourself. Half of your professors don’t like your style of writing. Do you really need them to put you down even more before you realize that you have a talent?”
Rick doesn’t say anything, his gaze dropping down to the table.
“You’re afraid to send out your manuscript because you’re afraid of rejection, I get that,” Kate starts. “But from what I understand about the industry that you’re trying to break into, it’s that you’re going to get a lot of rejection letters before you find someone who wants to publish your work. You just have to jump in and start.”
He looks back up at her. “You’re overly supportive, you know that right?”
“Overly supportive?”
“It’s a good thing,” he says, squeezing her hand. “Trust me.”
“I just want you to accomplish your dream. And for other people to see what I see in your writing.”
“What’d I do to deserve a girlfriend like you?”
Kate smiles. “If I remember correctly, studying for a test at a party.”
Rick laughs, dropping her hand as the waitress brings them their food.
“Well look at that, the nerd finally got the girl.”
