Don't tell other pro-barefoot people, but sometimes a trim isn't enough. Today this boy got a Superfast "shoe" on the foot that's missing half of the coffin bone. He likely has some tendon contracture as well, so he pretty much constantly slams toe first into the ground, causing massive distortion to the lamina at the toe and lots of inflamed sole. He's okay in boots, but until I can get some glue-on composite shoes for him, he will wear this. The first picture is pre- toe bevel, and about as far back as I can trim this distorted hoof without him bleeding. Superfast is a bit messy and requires quite a bit of cooperation from the horse, but the relief for this guy was instant. The second picture is him trying to escape from his stall 😂 and not standing like he's on a tightrope as he's prone to do without boots. Just having his sole off the ground allowed him to stand well enough to have the other foot trimmed with relative ease. It will be interesting to see if it affects his movement or not. I'm hoping it will allow me over time to work his toe back to a more suitable angle without hitting serum pockets. I'll update when we get the plastic shoes on him. TL,DR in certain cases form and aesthetics are less important than comfort.
