Compression Molding
In the visit to the ACMA factory in upper hutt, we were guided through the factory and was introduced many production methods. One of them is the ‘Compression Molding’ method. Compression molding is one of the many processing methods for manufacturing plastic parts that is used by many firms in the plastic industry. Before the plastic material existed, compression molding was generally used in the cooking industries to form the shape cookies and cakes. Compression is commonly used to produce thermoset plastic parts. The raw materials for compression molding is generally in a soft and liquid form .In the production process, the raw material are placed in an open and heated mold cavity. After the material has been placed in the cavity, the mold is then closed and activates pressure to force the material to fill up the gaps in the cavity. A hydraulic ram is used to achieve maximum force during the molding process. The process maintains it self until the material is ready.
This is a diagram showing how the process of compression molding in plastic factories works.
These are pictures I took in the ACMA factory. The first picture shows the compression molding section and the second the output, in this case they are cushions.
