the entire story of bateman is a statement about american culture and our eagerness to blend in with the crowds, oblivion, and superficiality. bateman constantly states how he "just wants to fit in" and at the end of the movie, he says it all was useless. he confessed but no one really cares because it has no gain to them. in the book, the ending is a little more clear and bateman doesnt cause such an overreaction to his confession - he just goes on living life as normal
