Terrace. Another view of the houses on Vicars' Close. If I remember correctly, this is the back entrance to the old Music School and concert hall. The number of times we ran down Vicars' Close in our school uniforms to make it to our classes in time is comical. Well, I'm sure the sight was, anyway. I'm actually still surprised we never tripped on the ancient paving.. Vicars' Close. For this week's theme I decided to take a trip back in time to the place where my UK journey started, and where my heart still calls home to this day. Wells, Somerset, is a very special city. Not only is it England's smallest city, it's also home to what's believe to be the oldest still intact residential streets in Europe! Vicars' Close was completed in 1430, and the original purpose of the street was to accommodate chantry priests, giving them direct access into the Cathedral of St Andrews. As a Cathedral School student, I walked up and down this street several times a day, probably not being able to appreciate the setting fully. But Wells draws me back regularly these days and with every visit I realise how lucky I was to spend some time here.
