Song: Release Me (Engelbert Humperdinck)
ADVENTURES IN TESTING THE WATERS
Ok so as p. much all of u know, I am trans. As this is something v. important to me, I like to try and figure out whether new acquaintances are transphobic so I can know whether or not I can talk about it with them.
EXPERIMENT 1: The Doctor Under Whom I Was Working
“Yeah, and I got to do research about transgender people too.”
“Oh, really?”
“Yeah, went through every one of my doctor’s charts—”
“Y’know, can you BELIEVE how screwed up some people are in the head?” (actual quote)
My eyes glint. Time to go on the offensive. “Really? You think that?”
(That is how to do it. You redirect the bigotry. Now it is not a thing they are throwing at some mysterious other. Now it is a thing they have in themselves that they are being forced to examine.)
“Well—”
(talked about past trans pt, misgendered said pt, acted all unknowing, etc. If I wasn’t working under him, I would’ve pursued, but I got the sense that I’d won the exchange.)
EXPERIMENT 2: Vice Boss
“Yeah, and I got to do some research on transgender patients too.”
“Really? Cool. What kind of research?”
Vice Boss looks promising! Continue discussion. Try to contain excitement when you find out Vice Boss, who has been raised in a super conservative family, has an FtM cousin and has volunteered to drive him to the endocrinologist whenever he wants
