Directly Inspired by Science Fiction: TASER
Tom Swift was the protagonist in a series of science-fiction books written for children in the early 1900’s. This series was deeply influential to a generation of science-minded folk including Steve Wozniak (the inventor of Apple 1 computer) and Isaac Asimov (prolific sci-fi author and scientist).
In the 1911 book, “Tom Swift and his Electric Rifle”, Tom Swift invented a futuristic stun gun. In 1969, a NASA physicist named Jack Clover invented the TASER (Thomas A. Swift’s Electric Rifle), naming it after his love of the series.
