The 3rd screen version (and first with sound) of Louisa May Alcott's 1869 novel was released on 16 November 1933.
Released during the Great Depression, Little Women was an immediate success. More than 20,000 braved the coldest November in half a century to attend the film's opening, and almost 500,000 people saw the film in its first 3 weeks of release.
Little Women was nominated for 3 Academy Awards, including Outstanding Production (Best Picture), and Best Director (George Cukor). Victor Heerman and Sarah Y. Mason received the Oscar for Best Adaptation.
