Part of me is really excited and happy about this and another part of me is just like “…that’s it?” The long wait for us to FINALLY hear that they did the bare minimum that should have been there to begin with…is deflating my excitement a bit. :/

I mean, yeah, this SHOULD have been in the game from day one, I’m not gonna lie or say that they should be praised to high heaven for doing what should have been done from the beginning, especially with Gil’s romance being filled with homophobic baggage.

But at the same time… We’ve had so many characters in so many games whose bisexuality has been cut – Kaidan and Ashley, Thane, Cullen and Solas, just off the top of my head – that to have a character’s bisexuality put in through patches feels like a win.

A win that shouldn’t have been a competition (to stretch the metaphor) in the first place, I’ll grant, but a win.

Not really. She’ll be a little disappointed that she didn’t get to look in Kalinda’s eyes to like, see her true colors or whatever be revealed, even if it just confirmed the obvious. But she gets over it and focuses on the Rem-tech you saved.

Now that you say it, yeah, I can see it. And the fact that I needed it spelled out... That’s the real big issue - Gil’s character arc isn’t his. This is JILL’S story, just from Gil’s perspective. He has no character arc, just existing to serve JILL’S character and her wants and desires. Like I said, he’s there to be her gay best friend and submit his wants and needs and desires to hers... But HE is the crew member and romance, while Jill’s in one cutscene briefly.

Gil’s character arc isn’t about him, we don’t get to help him decide if being the father of Jill’s kid is what HE wants, he just does is Because The Plot Says So. It’s again BioWare being completely tone deaf about queer issues because their gay person ends up being an accessory for a secondary character more than being his own.

I’m still mad about Jaal not being bi, but now I’m tempted to demand a complete rewrite of Gil’s story to, you know, ACTUALLY BE ABOUT GIL.

The way I read it (and, as I said, I’m not playing through for the time being, so maybe I’m just taking it wrong) is that he basically decides to be surrogate for his best friend, the procreation expert, to have a kid, and you’re kinda stuck along for the ride. Like, that’s how his character arc will end either way, romance or not.

And it... kinda bugs the hell out of me? Like on the one hand, maybe sorta I get the whole ‘have kids’ thing, but... I’m NOT having kids, I know myself enough to say that I am not cut out to be a parent, and I’m perfectly fine with that, I voluntarily exit the gene pool, and I’m not rolling characters who want kids either, and... Well, I’ve got a few levels and I need to word this out of my system.

Sure I get the idea of wanting to have kids, wanting to start a traditional family, but I feel like this kinda boxes Gil (and, by extension, a romancing Ryder) into this heteronormative ‘family unit’ idea, where Jill and Gil are the parents and Ryder’s third-wheeling, like this is mostly about a straight woman living out a fantasy of ‘marrying’ and ‘starting a family’ with her gay best friend, rather than a gay guy who wants a family. Like, within the narrative, it seems like Jill pushing him to be her baby’s father more than him wanting to have a child and her offering herself as the mother of his child.

And then outside the narrative... It feels like another slap in the face, at least for me, because not every gay person wants to have kids, and, if they do, a lot don’t necessarily want to go through the surrogacy - they’d sooner adopt. And, granted, not yet an issue in the game, but... Given real world issues on this subject, this is more of BioWare being absolutely tone deaf about the way things work and affect actual queer people.

Like I said, it feels like a straight woman fantasy of getting to have a child with her gay best friend, not something that has any basis in what Gil as a character wants - in fact, his whole relationship with her feels one-sided and having her pressure him into it, and we don’t get any kind of real option or opportunity to question it or call it out.

Just... really not something I’m comfortable with.
