Today is #WorldRefugeeDay One in every 122 people on the planet is now either a refugee, internally displaced or seeking asylum. Let us not forget those who have been displaced due to war, poverty or disaster, not just on this day, but every other day. Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle. _______________________________________ #WorldRefugeeDay. Palestinian refugee children in the shelter on the rural zone. The Gaza Strip is home to a population of more than 1.76 million people, including 1.26 million Palestine refugees. For the last decade, the socioeconomic situation in Gaza has been in steady decline. Years of conflict and closure have left 80 per cent of the population dependent on international assistance. The tightened blockade, imposed following the Hamas takeover of Gaza in June 2007, has decimated lives and livelihoods, resulting in the impoverishment and de-development of a highly skilled and well-educated society. Despite adjustments made to the blockade by the Government of Israel in June 2010, restrictions on imports and exports continue to severely hamper recovery and reconstruction. Over half a million Palestine refugees in Gaza live in the eight recognized Palestine refugee camps, which have one of the highest population densities in the world. #viewimages #viewimagestakeovers #eduardomartinsphotographer

Hi everyone, it's @edu_martinsp I'II be taking over VIEw Images feed this week with photos from the daily routine in Gaza Strip. ______________________________________ Egyptian authorities opened the Rafah border crossing on Saturday for three days, officials said. Rafah is the only major crossing between impoverished Gaza, home to 1.8 million Palestinians, and the outside world that does not border Israel, which blockades the strip and allows passage mainly on humanitarian grounds. Egypt shut the crossing in October last year after Islamist militants in Egypt's adjacent Sinai region killed members of its security forces. Since then, it opened the crossing partially and on a few occasions to allow thousands of Palestinians to travel in and out of the Gaza Strip.
