Vilemaw - Riftbound Alternative Card Art by Envar Studio
"Who is your god? What can your god do? Will he let you wither and die defending him? Or will he give you life and vitality like no mortal has ever known? Why serve a god who won't serve you?" - Elise
Should Elise really be a Shadow Isles Champion?
This is something that I’ve been thinking about for a while now. Elise’s ties to the Shadow Isles have always felt kind of arbitrary. She’s not undead, she has no affiliation to the Ruined King at all, and the ‘deity’ that she serves, Vilemaw, appears completely disconnected from the Ruination. Frankly, we still don’t even know exactly WHAT Vilemaw is. It’s called the Spider God, but in a world like Runeterra where we have Celestial gods, spirit gods, god-warriors and whatever Nagakaborous is, that really doesn’t clarify much.
I mean, even Legends of Runeterra seems to be implying that Vilemaw isn’t at all bound or tied to the Black Mist, as its card art shows it attacking a wagon somewhere that clearly isn’t the Shadow Isles.
I don’t know where this is, exactly, but the fact that there’s greenery and a blue sky means that this can’t be the Twisted Treeline, right? Maybe it’s on the Blessed Isles before they were consumed by the Black Mist, but really, why IS this giant carnivorous spider “god” hiding out underneath those isles to begin with?
The only thing that really seems to connect Elise and Vilemaw to souls and the Shadow Isles at this point is the Soulspinner, and frankly we know and understand even less about this guy than we do about the so-called “spider god.”
All we can say for sure is that he’s got some connection to the Kindred and, by extension, the other Mask Spirits, but everything beyond that is kind of up in the air. I mean, I’m pretty sure that he’s in Elise’s basement in this shot, so it’s not like he has any real ties to the Isles either.
Beyond all of that, Elise’s current bio states that she only went to the Shadow Isles to get Mordekaiser’s skull for the Black Rose... But the part about his bones being necessary to resurrect him was removed from Mordekaiser’s bio, so that doesn’t really work anymore, does it?
In conclusion: I do believe that Elise would be better-off if she were officially designated a Noxian Champion and her bio were rewritten to say that she got her powers in Noxus rather than the Shadow Isles. As far as I can find, this really wouldn’t affect or contradict anything in the lore at all, and the only issue would be Elise’s alignment to the Shadow Isles in LoR. Still, I’m sure you could find a way to justify it. Maybe you COULD say that she goes to the Shadow Isles at some point to accomplish something, like how Ziggs was thrown into Shurima or Malphite into Targon because that’s where their stories have put them, even if those aren’t their regions of origin.
I miss Twisted Treeline, please Riot bring it back. I couldn't even get the Vilemaw emote and I want it so BAD. Can you get from hextech crafting? I want to see Vilemaw again, I miss spider boy with the Avocado butt.

Gromp and Vilemaw: Monster Besties
You’d expect a monstrous spider deity like Vilemaw to just straight up eat Gromp the giant toad if they ever met, but I have a different theory.
Certain species of tarantula adopt small frogs and keep them in their lairs.
The frog benefits by eating the little bugs that go after the spider’s leftovers and getting a giant spider bodyguard. The spider benefits because the species of frog it adopts mostly eats ants, which in turn go after spider eggs.
Now Vilemaw is a Generic Pointy Fantasy Spider rather than a tarantula and Gromp is a toad rather than a frog, but this is a fantasy setting so the rules are different and I say they’re BFFs.
[Skin concept] Arachnid Acolyte Illaoi Based on Vilemaw and the Twisted Treeline. Nagakabouros isn’t the only god in Runaterra... :D
Top 5 Thursday: Best Dance Emotes
By Helmight
The League of Legends is filled with monstrosities, warriors, sorcerors, and powerful creatures from around the world, but they all have one thing in common: they all love to dance. However, not all of them can dance equally well - and so, today’s article set out to find the best dances in the game.
Note that I’ve included skins as candidates for this list, as some champions get a different dance when using a different skin. Non-champions are also on the list - if they can boogie, it only makes sense to include them, right?
#5: Vilemaw (Carlton Dance)
He’s not technically a champion, but the fact that Vilemaw can dance at all is what lands him a spot on the list. Forget Baron Nashor and the Elder Dragon - Vilemaw is the coolest epic monster just because he’s totally willing to dance with a bunch of champions who may or may not kill him later. There’s not a whole lot of dancing you can do when you’re a giant spider-god, but Vilemaw does his best.
#4: Malzahar ( “Can’t Touch This”)
I wouldn’t have given Malzahar a spot on the list prior to his gameplay update, but having Void Shift as his passive made it too good to pass up. 90% damage reduction, plus immunity to crowd control effects, means that you really can’t touch Malzahar while it’s active. It’s perfect synergy between his dance and his kit.
#3: Mafia Jinx (1920′s Charleston Dance)
For whatever reason, Jinx dancing the Charleston is incredible to me. It seems like the kind of dance she’d enjoy if she lived in the 1920′s, and the skin sells it. What really gets it on the list though is the music - the record player that appears next to her plays an old-timey remix of “Get Jinxed” while she dances. Can’t get much better than that.
#2: Forecast Janna (”Singin’ in the Rain”)
Sheer technical demand is what gets Forecast Janna a spot on the list. Most dance emotes are relatively simple and relatively short these days, but Janna gets a good ten seconds of dance routine in this skin.
The song choice is also a great one - I can definitely believe a weather god would be willing to carelessly sing and dance in the rain. The fact that she’s a weather forecaster in this skin just adds an extra layer of humor in top of it all.
#1: PROJECT Ashe (”Get Lucky”)
The reason PROJECT Ashe gets the top spot is because her dance is amazing even if you don’t know the reference. The fact that her hyper-advanced bow and scouting drone can combine to create an impromptu disco light setup is hilarious, and she gets her own techno music to get down to as well.
Then add in the actual reference - a goofy song about getting lucky. It’s a combination that’s tough to beat and definitely one that makes PROJECT Ashe the best dancer in the game.
Let me know which champion dances you like best in the comments, and be sure to like and reblog this article if you enjoyed it!
