Villa 1880 Seminyak is extraordinary – a contemporary-meets-colonial beach-in-ten vacation home, a design aficionado’s dream, and heaven for a few families (up to 8 adults and 8 kids) intent on holidaying together effortlessly, in total comfort and with considerable style.  

The heart of Villa 1880 is a beautifully restored plantation house from Borneo, made entirely of ironwood and constructed in 1880 – hence the name. Full of heritage charm, the house sits between two contemporary structures: a vast open-sided living room with sunset barbecue terrace above, and a two-storey sleeping pavilion lined with lime green shutters in homage to its colonial cousin.

Staying here is a dream for creatives and all who appreciate a refined design aesthetic. The visionary Hong Kong-based owners, an interior architect and vintage furniture showroom founder, have uncompromisingly high standards and an obsessive attention to detail. Italian retro furniture, vintage collector’s pieces, designer fabrics, inventive lighting and contemporary art are all part of the eclectic mix. Everything is achingly chic and high spec with no expense spared on leading-edge facilities (including mood lighting and a water filtration system which means guests may drink water direct from the taps – a rare convenience in Bali villas).

Families will appreciate the fabulous indoor and alfresco living spaces and five bedroom suites – one of them an eight-bunk children’s suite. Add a 19m saltwater pool with shaded shallow kids’ section, private spa, two kitchens, and a remarkably gifted chef among the professional staff, and you have all the ingredients to whip up the most memorable holiday imaginable.

Villa 1880 is tucked away down a quiet lane a few minutes’ walk from uber-trendy Batu Belig Beach and a 10-minute drive from both Seminyak and Canggu. There’s a vintage ‘70s VW Combi available to whisk guests to Bali’s many temples and tourist attractions (extra charge applies). But such is Villa 1880’s allure, you may never want to leave.

Staying at my Favourite Villa in Seminyak

When living in Asia there’s many different places to travel and visit, but there’s one place in-particular that everyone will visit at least once: Bali. I’ve now visited Bali on four occasions and, its safe to say, I’ve experienced it differently on each visit.

On the last occasion we chose to stay in the Seminyak area which is widely known as being the more upmarket area of Bali. This is due to the types of bar, restaurant, and shops, that are based in this area as well as the famous Ku De Ta and Potato Head beach clubs. Therefore, the type of tourist in this area is a world apart from the party-goers in Kuta (just a few kilometres south).

Probably the most exciting aspect of a holiday in Bali is renting a luxury villa in Seminyak; our own private getaway from the busy Bali beaches, streets, and traffic. Our favourite villa in Seminyak is Villa 1880 in the Batu Belig area; not far from the heart of Seminyak or the rice fields of Canggu. It’s ideally located in a peaceful area, and near the beach too.

Villa 1880 is pure luxury and really enormous. It has 5 bedrooms of which 4 are king size and the other is an 8 bed bunk room suitable for children. The outdoor living area is extremely spacious and a joy when hanging out during morning breakfast or at night under the stars. I’m told that the villa was designed around the restored Joglo as a centre piece and a famous architect named Marcus Foley created an elegant and luxury home around it that keeps some traditional features.

There’s many reasons why I prefer staying in a villa instead of a hotel; the privacy, the luxury, the peacefulness, and the private friendly staff that will attend with anything you need. Having your breakfast cooked by your own private chef, being driven to wherever you wish to go without, laundry cleaned without lifting a finger... the villa life is an unforgettable experience.
