Continued from [x] with @villdyr
It was such a lovely night. Or at least it should have been. With the city being covered with the thick snow, with the full moon so beautifully brightening the sky. But Nunnally could not enjoy the night. The scenery. The atmosphere. Instead, she felt cold as her navy blue cloak (richly decorated with the silver thread) did not provide enough protection form the chilly weather. Her cheeks red, her fair hair covered with already-thick-layer of snowflakes that didn’t want to melt anymore. A clear sign she was outside longer than she should have. Longer than it was reasonable.
She stood there, at the outlet of the small street, looking lost and desperate.
( “Top of the eastern tower. If you change your mind.” ) – that was what she had whispered into the darkness; into the void. But Nunnally knew they would not change their mind (nor she would have the courage to come there, even if she suggested it herself). As her mysterious interlocutor vanished into the winter landscape, she had that sudden thought. What if there was something more behind it? Behind this unexpected denial? What if she was just being sold? Betrayed? What if it wasn’t just the refusal to deliver the service (that was already partially paid for), but something more. She turned around, before the her imagination would become her reality. Before she could get caught and delivered back.
Nunnally was thinking about running. But even if the streets were relatively empty, it would still bring too much attention to her. So instead, she was walking. As fast as she could, but still not quick enough. Her shoes not really well-fitted for such a run. Another snowdrift she managed to conquer…but then she turned to look back to check if there was someone behind her, following her... But it was a mistake. She tripped: --
“Oh…” – a short exclamation; she was sure she’d end up on the ground, in that snow, but instead she ended up in someone’s strong and helpful arms…? He was tall. Much taller than her; it was so easy to tell. And now he was towering over her, and Nunnally was not sure if she was to feel safe (or frightened) because of that. By then, she didn’t trust her senses anymore. It was dark, but she could still see the scar at his mouth: --
“I…I…am all right…thanks to you, Sir.” – she lied. She was not all right. How could she be all right alone in this darkness? Didn’t he see she didn’t fit there? But she was not to tell the truth. His second question puzzled her even more. So, had he heard her speaking? He shouldn’t have…the distance was…
“It’s the partially ruined tower just outside the old defense walls. You can even see it from here.” – she pointed out to the dark shape visible in the Eastern night sky as she slowly steadied herself next to him – “It’s supposed to be closed and impossible to climb, but it isn’t… Why are you asking?” – Nunnally decided to consider it just an average question. As if she was to give the directions to a visitor. Though she was aware that most likely the question was related to her words. She should have left, but she was reluctant to do so. Perhaps if they saw her with him, they’d be hesitant to approach.
“It’s a beautiful night we are having today…” – she attempted to have the conversation continued in a light mood; but she was so cold. She was almost sure it was clear she was shivering under the cloak – “So, were you heading for the winter fair?” – a fair assumption, although the fair was actually quite far away from here. So, perhaps that was a foolish thing to ask - "Have you lost your way?"
I received this gorgeous piece from Villdyr as part of our art trade<3
I love everything about this. My jaw dropped the moment I saw it, and IT'S STILL ON THE FLOOR. I was super honored to do a trade with Pum! I love her work and if you're not following her already, I highly suggest you do :D
