Changing the Face of Video
Why you are missing out on great videos
We live in a video world. TV, movies, PCs, tablets and even our smartphones are ever ready to deliver great and sometimes not so great video content.
But let’s talk about quality, not quantity. YouTube is a fantastic repository of videos, but how often do you hesitate to watch a recommended video because you don’t want to sit through another pre-roll advertisement when you’re not even sure the video is worth watching?
Or take the examples of an event video or a travel video. You might be interested in seeing Apple’s latest product rollout or things to do in Belize, but let’s say you care specifically about the Apple Watch or scuba diving in Belize.
Glanceable Data
Analyst Ben Bajarin over at Creative Strategies has seen a rise in what he calls “glanceable data.” It’s the idea that given our increasingly hectic lives, content needs to presented more efficiently, particularly on mobile devices like smartphones and tablets, so we can grasp its value quickly and decide whether to dive deeper or move on. To which I say, “Right on!"
This is where our Vilynx Video Gallery comes into play. By adding one line of code, publishers and other businesses can automatically segment their videos into four distinct screens (or any number) that provide a quick, at-a-glance preview of what’s inside.
So imagine Apple’s recent event video. Maybe the static preview image shows CEO Tim Cook gesturing. Sorry Tim, not that interesting. But with Video Gallery, you could see four distinct screens showing the new iPhones, U2, Apple Pay and Apple Watch. Now that’s a video that will get clicked on.
// <![CDATA[ function resize_iframe(){ var newheight = $('#myframe').width()*9/16; $('#myframe').height(newheight); } resize_iframe(); window.onresize = function(){ resize_iframe(); } // ]]>
And this isn’t a random segmentation; Vilynx technology employs a complex algorithm that analyzes digital video content to determine and dynamically present the most significant visual moments. Think facial recognition, headshots vs. landscapes, changes in sound combined with scenery and you start to scratch the surface.
Bring your video thumbnails to life
Another nice feature of the Video Gallery is that it can be implemented in several different ways.
With Auto Play the video summaries play in a loop so right away consumers can see what’s inside.
Or if you prefer the initial static image, you can launch the individual videos by simply mousing over the screen. Or maybe the audio in a TED Talk or music video is the most compelling feature. With Video Gallery you can have audio play anytime someone mouses over the video.
Picture this
The bottom line is that there is so much more we can do to promote and expose great video content than simply presenting a static, single screen image.
That’s our mission here at Vilynx. We’ll have lots more to say in the weeks ahead, including some great customer examples and analysis of video trends, so please stay tuned to this space. And as always, we welcome your comments.
