“I’m not one for second dates...”
with tensions growing between his two countries, illya’s been told time and time again by his mother to SAVOR what very well could be one of their last trips to vienna in quite some time. the prince would, he insists, if only there were not one particularly VEXING detail of this specific trip ; that is to say, if his parents were not insisting upon finding him a suitable candidate for marriage.
( as for him, he’s far more concerned with holing himself up in the library or making fine use of the spectacular viennese stables, but there’s only so long he can duck his mother. )
he knows very little of their first choice, a woman who retains the title of the crown princess of naples despite her husband’s untimely demise. he suspects that very death, as well as her common blood, as the story goes, is likely the reason she’s elected to consider such nobility as himself ; the title of prince means something slightly different in russia, it seems, than it does anywhere else.
already nursing a glass of champagne and thinking wistfully of the promise of brandy later in the evening, illya looks out across the grand ballroom, keenly aware of the EMPTINESS behind his own eyes. she stands out, tall as she is, rather like a beacon of refinement that perhaps he’d appreciate more, were he someone else entirely. as it is, he can’t quite shake the feeling that this whole thing is rather more of a CHORE than it’s worth, that his parents’ attempts to wrangle him might ultimately destroy his life as he knows it.
but mother is watching and he must do his duty, so he approaches her on sure feet.
❛ your highness. ❜ he inclines his head, itching to sip again from his glass when it’s an appropriate moment. ❛ it seems appropriate to ask if I might occupy a spot on your dance card tonight. ❜
@vinciguera wants prince illya !!
this certainly isn’t the WORST task victoria’s ever placed on him, though illya certainly feels out of place as he escorts her. he’s not entirely comfortable with this kind of visibility to her peers, of course, and how could he be? they all look at him as though he’s some sort of MARBLE STATUE, some sort of behemoth curiosity for them to admire like a piece in a museum.
but she’s the MAIN attraction, no doubt by design -- and that’s something for which he’s grateful. even the russian can’t stop himself admiring her, to some degree, though he’s certainly more SUBTLE about it than most. she’s radiant -- and isn’t she always -- in that evening gown with her hair looking like spun gold. he’s sure she’s caught him looking, sure he’ll hear about it later in some coy, frustrating fashion.
❛ mistress vinciguerra, ❜ he leans close to her ear as he speaks, a hand settling innocuously on the small of her back, ❛ please tell me, if you require I call your nanny. she will need to know if we will be LATER than expected. ❜

❛ I fed her already. I did not want to wake you unless NECESSARY. I already know you did not sleep well. ❜

charlotte has been asleep for at least an hour now, leaving the adults to do as they pleas. ( a rare occasion, really, as more often than not their attention was RIGHTFULLY focused on the girl. ) what they’d apparently settled on was a rousing game of chess, far more illya’s idea than victoria’s, but amazingly enough, she’d chosen to humor him. every so often, he catches her gazing at him, and though he refuses to show it on his stoic face, it EMBARRASSES him, in some strange way. it isn’t until the silence becomes TOO MUCH that he finally elects to break it, and his concentration along with it. ( surely his modest consumption of vodka over the last couple of hours does not help, either. )
❛ enough chess, ❜ he states with some finality. ❛ I think there are more constructive ways to spend our time. ❜ despite himself, he cannot keep the FLUSH from coloring his cheeks, even at his own words.
