#Vinyl_HG special Saturday edition :) On this day in 1971, 45 years ago, Marvin Gaye's eleventh studio album "What's Going On" was released on #Tamala #Records ( #Motown ). Marvin himself did not live to see 45 as he was shot and killed by his father the day before his 45th #birthday in #1984. Luckily his #soul and #music will live on forever! #Vinyl_HG // #VinylWednesday // James Dewitt Yancey aka Jay Dee aka Dilla Dawg aka J Dilla released "Donuts" on #StoneThrowRecords on February 7, 2006. On his 32nd birthday, just three days before he passed away. He had been in the hospital for a long time due to a rare heart disease and he was also diagnosed with Lupus. "Donuts" is an instrumental hip hop album and contains 31 songs ( 29 of which he produced while in the hospital ). The record was released to universal acclaim and was ranked #38 by #PitchforkMedia on their Top 50 albums of 2006 and #66 on their Top 200 albums of the 2000s. A lot of producers and hip hop artists call the album one of the greatest album in hip hop history and beats/samples from the album ( J Dilla used a lot of old #SoulMusic making the songs on #Donuts ) have been used later by artist like; #Nas, #GhostfaceKillah, #Drake, #MFDoom, #TheRoots, #TalibKweli, #BigSean, #LupeFiasco... You get the point! J Dilla was an excellent artist and producer and this album is a masterpiece. When it comes to the name of the album, his record company released a short statement saying: "Dilla likes donuts." His mom confirmed the statement saying: "Yes, he loved donuts. I just bought him two dozen a week ago." Last week his uncle opened a donuts shop in Dilla's hometown Detroit in honor of his nephews legacy. The opening was a great success and it sold out three times on the first day. I like donuts and I like #JDilla 🍩

#Vinyl_HG // #VinylWednesday // I joined the best damn record club out there; @VinylMePlease and this was the first record they sent me; Fugees ( they should have stuck with Tranzlator Crew ) - The Score, released 20 years ago in February on Columbia Records. The Score was the second and last album from the hip hop trio, #LaurynHill #WyclefJean #PrasMichel . Upon its release the album received critical acclaim from most music critics and it was a commercial success, peaking at #1 on the #Billboard200 and the Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums chart. In 1997 the record was certified six times platinum. The trios first album "Blunted on Reality" was commercially unsuccessful but the record company believed in them and gave them a $135,000 advance and a second chance. With the money Fugees bought recording equipment and set up a studio in Wyclef's uncle's basement. They were left to themselves and Wyclef said about the recording process; "It was done calmly, almost unconsciously". There was no pressure. And that was reflected in the reviews; "The Score feels warm and intimate, the instruments are live but also because the Fugees sound so relaxed and casual." #Vinyl_HG // #VinylWednesday // I'm a big #music fan and I have a ( according to myself ) pretty sweet record collection. I'll post a #Vinyl on Wednesdays and give some info about the record. Mostly #Soul but also some #Jazz, #Folk, #Country and what I'm starting off with today; Hippitie Hop. #Rawkus & #MicMedia presents #LyricistLounge 2 was released in 2000. A follow up to their '98 Vol. 1. Vol. 2 received more commercial success, but got criticized from underground fans, mainly due to the album's more commercial sound, and also because of its focus on established artists, unlike the first installment, which largely featured up-and-coming MC's. The album reached #33 on #Billboard 200 and #7 on the #R&B / #HipHop charts. The Lyricist Lounge was founded in 1991 by two high school kids named Danny Castro and Anthony Marshall in a studio apt in #Manhattan, NY. The neighbors didn't like it, and the police came knocking. So they took it to the street, handing out flyers, moving from club to club. The Lounge became the place where the music industry came to find new talent. MTV picked up The Lyricist Lounge Show after seeing a video of an open mic night at the lounge.
