Turns out, when you keep redrawing the same characters over again, your art skill improves. Which is NOT so great when you got an animatic where a semi-realistic art style is backed with a cartoony art style.

Fan Animatic Analysis PART 1

If you haven’t watched my previous animatic, this post probably would make like 70% sense. Just a heads up before you click below the cut. And the analysis is LONG, so buckle up.

OKAY SO I WAS GOING INSANE. When Ch.24 dropped and that song hit my playlist, it was like all the stars disappeared and the sun exploded. Because I’m can’t keep my mouth SHUT, here’s my favorite thought process throughout the animatic.

This is the background without the text. I thought it would really be cute to doodle for the title screens. I even added little peeps! Idk who they are, they just invaded my planet bruh.

This is one of my favorite sequences here. Like I genuinely free-styled this, no reference. Did it took a long time to make the first shot? Yeah, absolutely, BUT it turned out so cool and totally worth it.

This was actually the first finished scene. At first, Stratt had eyes, but then I thought “Let’s make her spooky and mysterious,” ‘cause she DID have a somewhat mysterious presence in the fanfic, especially in Simon’s perspective. He only heard her existence through Grace, so yeah, she’s a bit of mystery to Simon. Oh, and the lighting GOES CRAZY.

It was also the beginning of my downfall, because this was also the moment where I decided to change my entire art style for the entire animatic. Which is like, great, except for the fact that I already drew the rest of the scenes. THAT took me at least a few hours to redraw and reorganize the facial proportions. WORTH IT THO

AND LOOK AT THEM LOOKING VULNERABLE.

This appeared for like less than 10 frames, BUT IT HOLDS SO MUCH WEIGHT. Like Simon is trying to reach out by being open and his walls are down. BUT THEN, he covers that vulnerability in the next shot by masking it through aggression. Like, he’s demanding and has a stern facial expression, exhibiting how quickly he falls back on his “fight” response.

On the other hand, for a moment, Grace is like guarded vulnerable. He sees that split microexpression on Simon and he KNOWS it’s his social cue to be vulnerable in turn, but HE CANT. While his mouth is tight-lipped, his eyes reveal the pity and internal hurt. Like “I want you to know” (callback to that one chapter I forgot) but on GRACE’S face? I tried to show that sentiment in this one shot.

OHHHH, these small details. I love doing them.
