   “When the Soviets applied pressure on the Czechoslovaks to abandon jazz music, [Josef] Burianek availed himself of jazz’s long heritage in Czechoslovakia. While saxophones were being confiscated in Moscow, Burianek insisted that in Czechoslovakia it was not “necessary to get excited about saxophones or though discard them in deep waters.” [He] defiantly insisted that the Czechoslovaks would not renounce their jazz heritage. “We shall therefore continue to sing the songs of the American negro slaves and of Jaroslav Jezek.”

But the pro-Stalinist government continued to exert pressure…Cultural officials tried to replace wherever possible the saxophone with the violin cello…In order to enforce the new restrictions, inspectors toured public establishments, while members of the Communist youth organization reported any couples who were seen dancing “in an individualistic manner.”
