Played this tonight in honor of @mikauzoran. :P I was too lazy to figure out and write my fingerings on the music, so I was winging it (especially with the high parts) and sort of sight-reading… I slow down on the fast passages, break all the long ties, and there are many wrong notes—and anyway I still suck at violin—but all that aside, this is one of my favorite violin pieces and it’s a lot of fun to play. Some day I’ll be able to play it as it should sound… *wishful thinking*

I stopped before the really fun part though, since I can’t play it with few enough errors not to make people cringe. ^^

(Ack, one week is the limit... can’t miss any more days!)

This is the first violin part of Oblivion. Some mistakes and stiffness, and of course it sounds weird without the other instruments, but not horrible I hope.

It’s two a.m., so I failed to go to sleep by one a.m. but if I sleep now, it’ll still be earlier than any other day this week so far.

Today’s recording isn’t pretty to listen to... it’s an etude.

It’s supposed to sound like this, but I was practicing sliding the shifts with the leading finger in order to be precise about what position I’m shifting to and from, so there’s an extra note added in between each shift. In the second half, I tried playing the etude as it’s written (without the extra notes). It still doesn’t sound great, so I need to practice more with sliding the leading finger.

Sometimes, conditions aren’t great for practicing, but I’m trying to do it anyway regardless of what’s going on or what time it is. I have a lot of chores to do, so don’t really have time to practice; people in my household were watching television, so there was background noise, I don’t like it when people can hear me when I practice, etc. There were plenty of excuses not to, but I’m determined to achieve my goal of practicing every day, so I did it anyway.

Due to lack of time, I just practiced Kreutzer No. 11 and my orchestra pieces. No Mozart today.

Today, I practiced:

- D major scale and Galamian arpeggios - Kreutzer 7, 14, and 37 - La Folia

And the Beethoven Romance in F, as recorded. Vibrato still needs work, and there are many parts I need to smooth out of course, but it’s getting better. At least I can play through it without slowing down significantly in certain areas. My violin teacher keeps telling me to make the half notes more expressive (even on an open string haha) and make my vibrato wider and more sustained. A lot of the vibratos are on the first finger, which is really difficult for me. -_-; I’ll keep working on it...

So, I did practice scales (C ... and tried arpeggios but I don’t understand Galamian contemporary arpeggios yet. x__X; Maybe today I’ll listen to recordings of how they’re supposed to sound so I can get them in my brain. My violin teacher accused me of thinking like a nineteenth century musician, whoops) and etudes (Kreutzer 7, 8, 14, and 37)...

But instead of posting a recording of the same etudes, here’s a messy and horrible rendition of Bach’s Concerto for Two Violins (first violin part), followed by random improv to practice vibrato.

I haven’t played the Double Concerto in a while, and there’s no regard to dynamics whatsoever... I was just trying to see if I remembered the notes or not. Later I’ll play it again and try to make it actually sound like music.

I saw an Instagram video of Sumina’s once where she was learning a new piece of music. Even though she didn’t know the notes yet, she still paid careful attention to the feeling and tried to make it sound like music. I need to learn from her... admittedly, when I’m focused on figuring out notes or fingerings I play like a robot and forget I’m supposed to be making music.

Things to work on:

-Intonation -Focus on feeling and music-making -Don’t pick up bow unnecessarily -Use full bows when appropriate -Continuous vibrato -Conquer arpeggios -Use metronome to improve tempo steadiness

Plus a lot more I’m sure, but that’s a good list to start with...

More practice, more etudes... listen if you want to be tortured. (Again, the point of this is just to keep myself accountable. ^_~)

Before working on the three aforementioned etudes, I practiced Kreutzer No. 8. I’ve been working on that one for a while (on and off, which is why it still isn’t great). I’m using it to work on intonation, shifting, string crossings, and a few other things. The first time I slurred each group of six notes, to practice using full bows, legato, and clean string crossings (not there yet). It’s also easier to hear the chords and fix intonation. The second time each note is played separately, as it’s written... to work on intonation (don’t have time to fix each note so fingers have to be more accurate) and speed. Once I can play this quickly, there are some bowing variations I can start applying.

This is a pretty multi-purpose etude. In addition to what’s mentioned above, it’s also a good one to practice adjusting elbow posture when crossing strings, since it travels from low to high often.

Mozart everywhere!!

Lately, I’ve been practicing Mozart Symphony No. 40 for orchestra, and my violin teacher just assigned me to learn a Mozart violin concerto. I picked No. 3... I love it so much! The solo part is beautiful, and it’s so light and lively. It reminds me of a little bird singing.

Of course... I don’t actually have enough skill to play it as it should be played, but I’m happy to be able to advance my musical education by attempting to play this wonderful piece.

(By the way, I literally just got the sheet music in the mail today and opened it to sight read, so my “interpretation” is nonexistent. :P Don’t judge.)

I love this performance by one of my favorite violinists, Sumina Studer! <3

Working on vibrato again, played the first page of my favorite Chopin Nocturne...

Vibrato is still not very noticeable in recordings. Still a far ways to go. ^_^;
