He sensed something uneasy with his master. Especially with that tone in their voice and how he had saved Kabuto the task to give themselves the vaccine without his help. Something that also seemed to make Kabuto feel a slight twinge in his gut despite not physically showing any emotions at first. 

That he was not needed. 

And that alone is one of the worst things that can happen to anyone who worked for Orochimaru. Not that he of all people needed to worry about but in Otogakure, it’s common to be on his guard at all times. 

“A break? While everyone in the hideout is rapidly getting sick as the weather changes outside? Even I’m trying to be careful not to catch something during my tasks and you should too. Even if your immune system is stronger than most peoples. " He'll carefully approaches them with quiet steps with his hands on his sides.

"You don't sound happy to see me. Should I leave you alone?" Its best to ask them even if the answer is obvious to avoid any assumptions.

It felt comforting to get back into the habit of her craft again, one of the few things she’d taken some pride in during her upbringing in Sunagakure. It was evening, the sun’s warmth beginning to fade into the sky as it descended. That did little to deter her, however, as she worked in the backyard area, they’re home small and humble. She pressed her heel into the stepper of her potter’s wheel, using a smooth rod to add curving designs as it spun. Mishil sang quietly (words foreign but the song is dear and familiar to her heart), knowing fingers gliding over her craft. Senu chirruped from her perch nearby, feathers ruffling briefly before settling again. She tilted her head, golden eyes narrowing briefly in thought until her lashes fluttered low again. Someone was nearby... Watching. 

She quieted her singing into a hum, lifting her newly formed teacup with care and rising to her feet. Naruto was inside, sleeping as far as she could sense. Mishil kneeled by the fire she had crackling nearby, wrapping the mold with care before using tongs to leave it in the flames.  

      ❝ ...How strange Senu, seems there’s no prey for you tonight to hunt.❞ At once the eagle crowed, feathers haunching in warning before it took off and flew to her extended arm. She brushed her fingers gently over their feathery chin. ❝ Senu is sharper then a guard dog, if someone’s out there--do come out. I’m afraid I’ve nothing of interest beyond clay pottery if your a thief.❞

          a boyish grin slides on jiraiya’s lips at orochimaru’s comment - there’s something oddly comforting at the notion that he belonged to orochimaru in a similar way that he wanted orochimaru to be his, a sense of security that jiraiya has always craved.

          deeply enamoured, he cannot help but open up his heart to him - it is oh so easy to be honest with him that what’s on his mind rolls off easily from his tongue.

          ‘ there are a lot of things i wanna us to do... ’   the toad starts with a grin, a thumb caressing the other’s cheek, fondly   ‘ but first things first - i wanna take you out tonight, to a proper dinner i mean. ’

          because jiraiya is nothing if not a gentleman - or so he likes to think .

“… stay with me?”

Everything in the hideout was peaceful, no other important tasks were needed to finish other than the usual daily chores of his. But the most important one was the ones of him having to take care of his master, whether they're feeling ill seriously or not, or if they wish to trust their task to him. Today, Kabuto was back from a espionage mission and after a day of rest, he managed to assist with whatever was needed of him. 

Now, he needed his rest. 

He stops in front of the wooden door after hearing them speak up, by the tone of their voice, but why does Orochimaru want with him after their tasks together is already done? 

"Feeling lonely, Lord Orochimaru?”  He says with an amused tone as he closes the door and he turns to them. There has to be another reason why Lord Orochimaru needed him to stay so perhaps he can hold off some sleep in the meantime. 

“Is there a reason why you need me to stay? What else do you need?”

“I think you’ve had enough tea for today.”

Stirring another batch of the chamomile tea in the tea pot as he watches the blended powder change the color of the clear water into the desired amber color.

He lets out an exhausted yawn as he pours the hot contents down the white ceramic cup that he was previously using, he heard Orochimaru's voice, but he chooses to not turn around to answer them. More focused on to not get burned by the hot tea pot.

"Lord Orochimaru, I'm fine. This is merely the third batch that I made tonight, I can't sleep. I'm so tired but when I try to sleep, my mind would keep me awake and make me restless."

He turns to them now, "If this tea doesn't work, I'll be most grateful if you could use the chloroform on me."

“Are you injured? What happened here?”

Kabuto tries to reply to them, but only wet coughs escaped his lips as he tries to finish healing the mass open wound on his stomach, if Orochimaru had arrived much earlier, he would've seen the internal organs were slipping out of his stomach, it's healed plenty enough that he's not in danger of bleeding out anymore, but he still needed to rest. Least the snake summon that Kabuto sent out managed to reach Orochimaru before the traitors did.

"The new recruits... *cough* they're trying to... free the prisoners... got us when we weren't looking..." He says while trying to cough out the rest of the dust that somehow got in his lungs. How embarrassing, to easily trust the new people only for them to launch a surprise attack on them. Especially on Kabuto who's usually on guard all of the time, guess his overconfidence really is making him sloppy when it comes to expecting surprise attacks.

Unacceptable. He thinks to himself without looking back at his master before him.

the room is filled to the brim with the scent of medicinal herbs,   its pungent sweetness familiar to the point of being relaxing to him,  something to anchor him here,  a steady floor under once trembling feet.  orochimaru speaks and his head rises,  always so keenly attentive,  accustomed with the practices of listening and observing,  picking clues and tells from people as easily as one would rip flowers from their natural bed.  it used to be a matter of life and death,  a skill he had needed to hone in order to survive  —  and what about now?  kabuto stills the methodical rhythm of deft fingers and listens because he wants to,  instead,  because he can't imagine not being drawn to the sannin.  here,  he is a devotee without an altar  (   let me see you   /   know you   /   tell me each horrible thing you ever did and let me love you either way   ).  here,  his life means something.  he is not just surviving anymore,  one foot in front of the other and static in his head.  kabuto owes it all to him,  it shines in everything he ever does,  nothing but unfiltered devotion showing through onyx gaze. 

❛  orochimaru sama  —  ❜   careful,  but with no trace of hesitation or tremor coursing through his voice.  he stops only to allow him to retreat,  to let his words fall between them as nothing more than stray thoughts,  should orochimaru wish to do so.   ❛  would you tell me?  about your past,  i mean.  ❜   knowledge is a knife,  that much he has learned.  it is one kabuto does not wish to wield against him,  however  —  if only by the blade,  holding out the handle to the other and showing him exactly where to cut.
