TIME TRAVEL AU. Starter for @viralrequiem !

                              ‘  I’m  gonna  sit  right  here  with  you.  '

         THE  WORDS  RING  FREELY  in  her  mind.  They  wouldn't  sound  like  much  to  most,  but  to  her,  they  mean  the  world.  Especially  right  now,  where  she  needs  to  hear  such  reassurances  the  most.  It  helps  her  steady  herself,  take  a  deep  breath  and  give  him  a  small  tired  smile.  She  wants  to  reply,  but  she's  not  sure  how,  her  head  tilting  as  the  words  continue  to  travel  around  in  her  brain,  being  processed  slowly,  given  how  exhausted  she  is.

They  weigh  heavy.  Heavier  than  they  really  should  -  which  is  a  feat  in  this  situation.  It  almost  sounds…  she  shakes  the  thoughts  from  her  head,  dismissing  them  before  they  can  even  form  completely.  This  is  no  time  for  nonsense.  Then  again…  they  were  going  to  be  here  awhile,  perhaps  more  than  awhile.  Nonsense  was  kind  of  welcome  in  its  own  way,  to  keep  her  thoughts  off  of  the  inevitable  of  being  stuck  down  here  for  the  rest  of  their  short  lives.

Probably  very  short  lives.  They  could  get  crushed  by  falling  debris  at  any  moment.  Or  their  deaths  could  be  prolongued  into  whatever  came  first,  running  out  of  air,  or  starving  to  death.

How  cruel  that  would  be  -  to  cure  a  man  only  to  make  him  suffer  an  even  longer  and  more  miserable  death.

She  felt  guilty  again,  all  of  a  sudden.

“  I-I'm  sorry  a-about  all  this  …  ”  she  murmured,  her  quiet  words  still  echoing  in  the  vast,  dark  chamber  as  she  waved  a  hand  vaguely  in  his  direction  and  the  direction  of,  well,  everything  else.

It's the sound of gunshots firing off on occasion in the distance that leads Vergil down his current path.

Originally, the half-demon thought that this 'Racoon City' was utterly ABANDONED. It's basically RUINS, from what he can tell. Yet, he's finding FRESH bodies the further he climbs the levels of this particular building.

Well-- Fresh might be a STRETCH to say. The corpses he's stepped over were rotted . . . yet currently BLEEDING out completely. How can this be? Vergil has dealt with many species, but these look HUMAN. Sickly, so. Perhaps the POWER of this T-Virus he's researched ISN'T anything worth pursuing. It's when one body twitches to life with a hand reaching out towards him did he change his mind. A boot CRUSHES the multi-fingered appendage, earning a rasp from the zombie before it lays still for good.

That's right . . . a pathetic human cannot handle the gift of reanimating, but HE could. All he has to do is continue following whoever is paving the way for him and get them to SHOW him what he seeks.

Although, doubt begins to creep into his mind once more. Now that he's climbing towards the highest floor. . . what could even be up here? Glacier-coloured eyes flicker downward to see that instead of solid ground, it's GLASS. Could it be that they're standing on a roof of sorts? Vergil doesn't give it too much thought when he FINALLY spots who he's been following for the past hour or so a few feet ahead.

❝ENOUGH. This nonsensical wondering ends now. You'll show--❞

The silver-haired male is interrupted by what sounds like GROANING. Pressing his lips together, he spins on his heel to face whatever rudely cut him off. Vergil wasn't exactly expecting the horde of the undead to not only be wearing armor, but now have WEAPONS on them. He tenses, unsheathing his sword swiftly. It's then he glances over his shoulder to the man that doesn't look like he's far from becoming one of THEM.

❝Brace yourself. I need you to SURVIVE long enough to FINISH this conversation.❞

Leon had dropped off the face of the planet. One night they were hanging out at her place, beers on the go and some God awful television show on in the background. Maybe a wolfish game of hot or not ( which, admittedly, ended in more laughter than scandalous revelations ) , and to top it off they ordered some takeaway. But the next night after that? Radio silence.

The agency put her on desk duty, which in of itself wasn't odd. But what was, was the empty seat beside hers. Leon hadn't come into work. Then the next day he didn't show up, either. Nobody mentioned it. He didn't pick up. She felt insane. So, of course, the next logical step was thinking that there was some grand CONSPIRACY afoot. Jess was going to singlehandedly take it down.

It took two weeks for her to find out where he was. Thanks to help from some insider friends that were happy to risk their jobs and possibly their lives, she had found his location: a quiet two story house in some quiet suburban neighborhood — freshly mowed grass, shiny mailboxes, white picket fence...The American dream.

Jess had been stood staring at the house for at least an hour. She was CONFUSED. Thoroughly. Because what the fuck was Leon Kennedy doing in a place like this for the last two weeks? No contact, no warning, no creepy text from an unlisted number telling her he was okay. She had worried about him, had concocted a nation-wide conspiracy that wasn't even remotely true, apparently, and... what an asshole.

She strode up to the door with unmatched CONFIDENCE, a certainty to her movements that made it feel like she belonged there. Stilling at the wood, she BANGED with enough force that the door screamed on its hinges. And when it was yanked open, she scoffed audibly.

"Where the hell have you been?!" Her voice was raised. Jess wasn't yelling, but she wasn't exactly speaking in a hushed tone. She was clearly angry and annoyed, heart thumping with the realisation that she had just wasted the last two weeks. "Not even a damn text?"

From the next house over, the curtain twitched. The man inside, Leon's target and a high ranking bioterrorist, had heard the commotion and was checking to see what was wrong.

Yep. His cover was going to be blown if he didn't sort this out quickly.
