Yesterday I decided to ride up the Devil’s Punchbowl cycle track as a reccie for my upcoming Everesting ride. I’ve been debating whether to go lighter and donut on my Tarmac Pro Disc or to go with comfort and go with my Reilly Spectre Titanium.

I rode it for the first time on the Reilly bike and was surprised how well the climb went. Either I’m in really good shape but I suspect that it’s more to do with the fact that the bike is just perfect for the mix of road and gravel path that the segment offers.

As it was I ascended the segment in my 2nd fastest time which was surprising as I was pacing myself imagining the effort I could sustain for 20 odd hours of riding.

I recorded the ride and overlaid my Garmin data, using the Garmin Virb app, on top so I could check my various metrics (speed, cadence, power and heart rate and it gives me a pretty good insight to the climb that I will have to do 50 times to achieve the Everesting challenge.

It will be a long day in the saddle that’s for sure but I came away quite confident of my chances.

If you manage to watch to the end enjoy the spectacle of my Go Pro taking a flier as I cross the cattle grid at the top. I’ve not know a Garmin quarter turn mount to separate before but that was the culprit. Thankfully I had finished the segment by that point.
