Guide to Below Sea Level: Vircian Names and Birthright
Like many cultures, the people of Virceanum have a first and last name (the first name being made of 1-3 syllables and the last is always 1), but what sets them apart is the fact that these names conjoin to form a single name (their full/true name). Which they will always go by except with close relations like friends and family who will use their first name.Â
Structured: _____+___=________ (First + Last = Full)Â
Example: Kirana + Tis = Kiranatis
It could be left at that, but there is one more aspect to consider when it comes to male names. The Vircian are for the most part a patriarchal society and proudly believe in birthright. To signify said birthright the one who holds it has their mother’s maiden name added to their first.
Structured: _____(___)+___=________ (First(Mother’s Last) + Last = Full)
Example: Mar(Ko) + Tis = Markotis
In the case of Half brothers with the same father, like Atlantis and Leviathantis, the younger (Leviathan) does receive his mother’s name (Than) and the birthright associated with it. However, only the elder gets both the birthright of their father and his mother and is charged with leading the family when the time comes.
The only way for birthright to pass is for the 1st born son must either die or be disowned.
