Hi! Would you be willing to explain to me how the concept of platonic soulnates is arophobic? I myself am not aromantic, and would like to understand why this is the case, to avoid offending anyone! Thank you!
This masterpost (and particularly this post within it) does a good job of explaining the problems with soulmates in general, and I highly suggest you read through them.
The tl;dr is that there are a bunch of systematic issues with soulmates as a general concept as thought of in society, which you can find in media as well as in soulmate AUs. Soulmates have a lot of arophobia in them, so aros tend to complain about the perpetuation of the idea of soulmates, but unfortunately, people never listen to our complaints.
How do I know that people don’t listen to our complaints? When someone talks about “platonic soulmates”, they’re just doing performative allyship instead of actually being a good ally. They think “platonic soulmates” are a cure-all to the problems in soulmates because they’ve just guessed at what our complaints would be, instead of actually sitting down and listening to what aros have to say about soulmates.
(To be clear, that frustration/anger is not directed at you, but instead at everyone in the notes who says “but platonic soulmates!!!”. Thanks for the ask, and again, here’s some stuff you can read through).
