      "--my apologies for my tardiness          this morning. How might I be of          service to you, madam?"

   Lilith didn't look at the stranger as she bustled into her office late that morning, bustle train trailing behind her, to the glass cabinet by the door that contained most of her smaller fossils. She opened it, putting away the small objects - whale teeth, in fact - that had stolen away much of her time from that first appointment.

"Oh dear, do you need help?"

      "--Vastra. Vastra, stay back."

   He held his hand out, trying to indicate that she stay back. He was breathing heavily, his eye black and bruised, bright orange blood dripping from the corner of his mouth.

      "Please... please, stay back."
