Academic Libraries and Special Libraries
Do any academic librarians or special librarians have any general advice to new library school students/aspiring librarians on what additional courses they should take in school or skills they should learn outside of the traditional MLIS curriculum? I understand programming is becoming an increasingly useful and sometimes mandatory skill for some library positions, but would knowledge of a separate language be useful, or getting a certificate in bookbinding (I'm interested in pursuing this, as well as brushing up on my Spanish/French skills)?
Right now my ideal professional/educational opportunities would be the Smithsonian Libraries' Virtual Internships or Fellowships.
As far as academic libraries go, my ideal professional/educational opportunity would be working at the UC Berkeley Libraries. I'm not familiar with whether or not UCB has fellowship or internship opportunities available (virtual or not, in-person would be better as I am based in Oakland). In the meantime, I am consistently looking for employment opportunities available through their Careers Page and Twitter page.
