how to care for shirley: do not cage her, but support her in all she does. take her for picnics and walks, hold her hand and guide her when she falters, help her up if she falls. be caring and loving, as well as accepting-- she is still learning a great many things, something that deserves no less than admiration. be there for her during the day as politics overwhelm, and relax alongside her in the early hours of the morning, when the noise lulls and all is quiet.

Sometimes it seemed so long ago - that day on top of the world when Shirley had dropped her weapons and hesitantly extended her hand to the Orerines, but ever since then Chloe had made sure she would never forget it. Just by being there.

✿ Chloe is one of the few people (the others being sometimes Senel and always Grune) who Shirley feels safe in showing physical affection towards. And vice versa she is quite comfortable with Chloe touching her hair or holding her hand. It’s a platonic skinship she’s never had before, and it is a sign of how much she trusts Chloe.

✿ Funnily enough, when Shirley first joined the party she really thought she and Chloe might never get along. It had less to do with the knight’s obvious feelings for Senel and much more to do with how much better she seemed as a person. Chloe seemed everything Shirley was not at first - confident, skilled in fighting, and selfless to a fault. It was when Chloe almost succumbed to her shadow and Shirley finally got the courage to talk to her as an equal that she realized that while Chloe was indeed all that, she was just a struggling girl too. That was why Shirley was so intent Chloe stay on the Legacy - she didn’t want her to make the same mistakes she did by walking away from something good.

(And she wanted to talk to her more too).

Picnics at Lumen Spring had become standard activity for the couple somewhere down the line. It had started naturally, really, with Norma tagging along at first when she still hadn’t wrapped her head around their newfound closeness. Now, more often than not the Merines and the knight went here to escape the busy politics of every day life, knowing their friends would know where to find them if anything happened.

Shirley was sitting next to the spring after having helped Chloe pack everything back in the picnic basket. She hummed Grune’s song softly as she stretched her hand out just beneath the surface of the water, watching the current flow of it and thinking of nothing in particular other than how nice the sun felt and how she really had to get that recipe from Chloe for next time.

A silver fish moved past her hand and she laughed. A swim did sound nice right about now but...

“Chloe?” She stood up, shaking the water off herself as she walked over to the tree Chloe was propped up against. “Tell me... have you ever thought of going in the shallower part of the spring?”

Shirley had been absorbed in the copy of the Relares text one of the Ferines elders from the Mainland had given her. She finally had the time to start translating it but it had been such a nice day it was hard to stay at her desk in Musette’s study. So she and Chloe had taken over Will’s living room while he was out, enjoying the afternoon sun rays that came through the large front  windows.

She had been so absorbed that she hadn’t noticed the change in the position and she only looked up from her parchment and notebook when Chloe’s hands slackened around her waist. She was just about to ask if anything was wrong when Chloe’s head fell to to rest on Shirley’s right shoulder. The Ferines girl brushed aside raven locks of hair from her girlfriend’s face and smiled at the sight of her sleeping face. Maybe it was time for her to take a break too.

She put her things down safely beside her and placed her own cheek against Chloe’s, getting comfortable. If Chloe asked, Shirley would say she fell asleep first.
