Audacity [Mikasa - Jean]
She hadn’t been able to find him all day long.
They told her that he had been out for a guard duty. Ever since they came back from the operation outside the wall to retrieve Eren, and then hide him far away of human habitation, security had always been a priority. The former cadets of 104th trainee squad had, who had now been appointed as the new Levi Squad, took their turns on guard duty. Mikasa had just finished hers, but apparently he had just started his shift. Now there was no chance to see him until dinner.
The sun had long set in the far west when his group finally returned – having finished the morning shift. Mikasa was stirring the thick liquid in the pot a little bit more – trying to make it more fitting to be called potato soup, or at least human food – when she heard footsteps outside the front door. She put down her wooden spoon immediately and approached the door, picking up a rifle from the nearest stool. “Name yourselves,” she said as she put the rifle on her eye level, her index finger was cocked around the trigger, ready to fire should the people behind the door gave a wrong answer. “Jean Kirschtein, Sasha Braus, and Connie Springer, reporting in from guard duty!” a firm voice answered him from beyond the door. She sighed. Though tiring, Corporal Levi had ordered that this security procedure be carried out at all times – no exceptions. They were facing too many enemies now, most of which were unknown.
She put down her gun, settling it back to its place, and opened the door. There she saw three of her friends, wrapped in their brown military cloaks, shivering from the cold. “Come in, meal’s about to be ready,” she said. They didn’t need to be told twice. Soon they were already in, Sasha and Connie took the trouble to serve the soup for themselves, then sat down a little bit further. Jean was sitting alone on the big table. She poured the potato soup into a bowl, and put it in front of Jean. “Here,” she said as she settled herself beside him.
“I’ve been waiting for you. There’s something I need to tell you.”
