My progress so far since starting the Viscomms Specialization for my FMP. In my initial project proposal, I wanted to do book covers for my novels as my concept one. My second concept was to illustrate hypothetical covers for albums I was interested in.
Through Anna’s advice during the first draft presentation, I decided that I would do album covers in order to depersonalise myself from the concept. It would be easier to effectively work on something that I did not have a creative attachment too.
After speaking with Doug, we came to the conclusion that it would be easier to condense the idea into one illustration for the Alternative Hip Hop supergroup Secret Circle, for the sake of concentration.
This helped because I was able to separate, whilst working on a contemporary brief, as the group are still yet to release their unnamed debut album.
So far as of writing, I am in the midst of wrapping up some contextual work, while I am also doing thematic research for the cover. I’ve decided to use mixed-media approaches, photo-editing approaches, and fine-art techniques to experiment with. What I conclude on using I am yet to decide.
I am researching Bene Rohlmann (an illustrator and collage artist), Lincoln Agnew (illustrator and collage artist), Alison Lambert (Illustrator utilising charcoal), and Lil Ugly Mane (the group’s producer, rapper, and illustrator, who uses photo-editing software to create album covers).
I am also looking to research motifs, themes, and personal interests of each group member. I did a little bit of investigation into the occult as it was a particular interest of Lil Ugly Manes. I also, for my own ideas, researched some microbiology documents, which I have quoted in the bibliography.
The reason I researched microbiology is because I feel the group act as a chemical compound. Composed of different constituent parts, assembling into a biological construct of some sort. I also thought the amoebas were pretty cute too.
Currently, I look to finish my artist research and to continue developing and experimenting. I will look to do another wave of artists soon. I might look into doing some photo-editing, and some charcoal portraits of the band members.
