#FridayFeature | Donald Sultan ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In the process of translating things from the real world, Sultan discovered the joy of ambiguity: images could take on more than one meaning. The lemon could be an eye-socket, smokestacks could be the stems of flowers, street lamps could suggest tulips, an MiG airplane could look like a fish. Behind many of these images, there are barely disguised erotic associations. It requires no Freudian genius, for example, to see the outline of a female breast and nipple in his paintings and drawings of lemons, or the suggestion of buttocks and thighs in some of the delightful small still lifes of pears and nectarines. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Text source: Ian Dunlop, Donald Sultan, Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago , Harry N.
