Bhakti Baxter (born 1979 in Miami, Florida) An Intelligible Sphere, 2005 Medium-density fibreboard, expanded polystyrene foam, plaster and paint. 📷 @alice__lowe for @artanddesignmatters www.ArtandDesignMatters.com Baxter’s sculptures from the early 2000s show a great interest in geometry, elementary shapes and proportions. This grouping of spheres takes its title from a twelfth-century quote by French theologian, Alain of Lille that attempts to define God thru metaphor: “God is an intelligible sphere whose center is everywhere and whose circumference is nowhere.” In nearly all of his works, Baxter fashions ordinary materials into abstract objects, which allows the viewer a large amount of freedom for interpretation. Acquired in 2013; Gift of Dr. Carl and Shirley Schwartz.
