The Tech Wishlist from Mom
I come in the kitchen. It smells great. I am expecting to see my dinner cooking.
What I actually find is my mom made her dinner, and she left me a note on a plate with her “tech wishlist.” If you are a child of a Boomer and don’t know what this is, consider yourself VERY LUCKY. This is like a “honey do list” except for children who are presumably more “techie” than the parent. And as a child, you only perpetuate this notion by growing impatient when parents don’t know how to do something on their smart phone, smart tv, smart watch...etc.
The whole thing gave me quite a chuckle actually. Of course, I am eternally grateful to be staying with my mom and eating her food in the fridge. I’ve been hanging out at my parents place for a few weeks now, I guess my mom wanted to make sure I wasn’t getting too comfortable!
It made me realize a few things:
1) My mom is going to rely on my technical support as long as I keep helping her
2) Hiring Geek Squad one Christmas did not get me off the hook
3) Maybe this is equal work for equal pay
4) I will not encourage her to buy any more “smart” devices, as it increases the items on my list dramatically
I will leave you with another anecdote from my mother daughter relationship. On Sundays, my mom goes to church and leaves the house around 9am. This is my only day to sleep in past 7am and I enjoy it thoroughly. Although, my mom feels a need to “check in” before she leaves for church. Maybe I will wake up and fret about where she has gone. Maybe I won’t know it’s raining and need to take an umbrella. Or maybe, just maybe she needs a few things checked off of her “tech wishlist.” Whatever the need, she comes into my room and loudly asks, “Are you sleeping?” The question in itself, is hilarious, because it somehow feigns politeness, but is actually very obvious what she is really saying, “Please wake up, so I can talk to you, right now!”
