Traditional event in the Japan’s science city, Tsukuba

Tsukuba City in Ibaraki Prefecture, is about one and half hour away from Tokyo by Tsukuba Express. We visited Tsukuba City to see the massive street party that is held every August, Tsukuba Matsuri.

The main event of this festival is the parade of Nebuta floats through the street around Tsukuba Station. The nebuta floats are pulled by teams and accompanied by traditional instruments. During the parade the teams will throw small bells to the mass.

To get a good view, we should try to pick out a spot early before sunset. Numerous food stalls sell typical Japanese festival foods, so we can get dinner while waiting for the parade to start.
