"10 Together" WINS Best Publication Award at PQ2023

In their beautifully crafted book, the authors document and critically question the 10 years of their collaboration across time, across national and continental borders, and against cultural expectations. Playful and poetic in their practice, Longva and Carpenter explore basic human needs in a variety of settings, often physically tasking. 10 Together: Performances by Longva+Carpenter is an artist-edited monograph of collaborative practice in durational visual performance, providing a chronology of work presented from 2010 to 2020 in galleries and public spaces, in city centers and small towns from the rural USA to islands in Norway, with stops between in Finland, Poland, Germany and Czechia. With vibrant images and descriptions of each work in English and Norwegian, the performances are made accessible to a public beyond the initial viewers at each site. The publication provides an international, intersectional and practice-focused survey of the collaboration with insightful essays which detangle and designate the artists' creative methodologies as vital to current performance discourse.

CarpWoz | Objet petit a

A super sneak preview of CarpWoz’s newest collaboration presented last week. More photos and video coming soon!

The energy room of the National Palace of Culture (NDK) inspired CarpWoz’s research on the symbolic power of prominent architecture and its mysterious inner workings, including objectophilia and the Lacan concept of the objet petit a. This deep love of and intimacy with an object, as related to the unobtainable object of desire, channeled the development of a durational performance with sound installation, Objet petit a. As a further nod to Lacan, CarpWoz explore the significance of edges, the human urge for that which is out of reach, on the other side. Sites, states and situations that exist in-between, including points of entry of the body, thresholds of structures and borders of all kinds, therefore hold special significance. Objet petit a enacts an impossible quest to cross a literal threshold, seeking improbable silence, hindered by a sound installation triggered by the performers’ movement. Sounds of a Geiger counter and metal detector alarm measure an invisible danger, and peripherally relate to the current migration crisis. Layered with personal, cultural and political connotations, Objet petit a explores the complexities of identity and the subjectivity of experience, using the NDK as a relational and relatable object of desire, symbolic for Bulgarian residents, artists, and visitors alike.
