Cake - A Gus Birthday Drabble #5

“Usually it’s the birthday boy who wears the blindfold.” Viv held back at least half a dozen dirty jokes and went for just the straight line. She sat on his couch, leaning back with arms out and leg crossed over the other. When Gustavo invited her over early before going out with the gang, she honestly expected just to catch up on Great British Bake Off and not...whatever the hell this was.
“Well birthday boy gets his way and birthday boy says don’t look let.”
Even without her eyesight, she could tell the lights were dimming and she couldn’t help but laugh out with a few hiccups. “Oh my God - birthday boy’s really going to give me a lap dance on his-” she removed the blindfold early and her smile dropped.
Gustavo was standing before her, but not in his stripper clothing she knew him to have. Instead he was in the first T-shirt she ever gave him - a white DIY “Jesus Loves Me” tye dye with a clip art cat on it - and he was holding a birthday cake with a single candle that read -
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, VIVI
She looked at it and then back to Gus as he knelt down to put the cake on the coffee table in front of them - his new prosthetic leg much easier for him to handle.
“What’s this?” she said.
“I missed your birthday and I thought the more belated it could be the better surprise.”
“Gus...” Fuck, she was feeling...feelings!! “Gus, this is so dumb.” She tried to keep the composure but he just smiled at how she really got surprised. “This is your birthday, you goofnut, we need to be celebrating you with our friends.”
“Birthday boy gets what he wants and he wants very-belated-birthday-girl to make her wish and blow out her candle.” He slid the cake forward and her eyes looked at the flame. “Happy birthday, Vivi. I love you.”
Viv didn’t need to blow out a candle to get a wish, but she did. And when the flame went out she leaned forward to kiss Gustavo.
They would be a good hour and a half late to Gustavo’s birthday party at Milo’s.
