Produced by Steve Albini, Viva Last Blues has been cited as one of the best albums of the 1990s (ranked #60 by Pitchfork) and one of the "Greatest Indie-Rock Albums Ever" (ranked #98 by Blender).

Viva Last Blues, Palace Brothers (1995)

Personally, I can’t hear Will Oldham’s voice without hearing Phil Elverum, only Oldham is louder, more humorous and less delicate. Other than that, there isn’t much to compare bar their similar foundations in contemporary folk, and Viva Last Blues is a listen that poises itself between raucousness and sensitivity. It isn’t as impressive as Oldham’s later work under Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy but it’s still rather inventive and enjoyable piece of folk rock.
