Price Check at the VJMC Swap Meet

There are always bargains, always dreamers, and always (seemingly) rain over the three-day Vintage Japanese Motorcycle Club Swap Meet. What prices are vintage Japanese bikes fetching these days? Getting there Saturday afternoon means the best of the litter had already been picked and half the vendors have retreated to higher - and dryer - ground. Still, I was able to record prices on what I thought were the best offerings of what was left (all in running condition).

The Kaw Z1 asking price - without it's original four mufflers - was puzzling, but the Yamaha YM1 below two grand was equally puzzling as to why in the hell it was still standing in the mud unsold.

Somebody needs to grab that German RZ350!

The Vintage Japanese Motorcycle Club Swap Meet, Gettysburg, "Fantastic Vehicles and Where to Find Them," a bullet hole in an old Harley-Davidson showroom window, and more! — all in one road trip. For me, that's a full weekend.

The VJMC event is what it is. If you've never been, please make a point of it next August. Truthfully, for me the meet has just become an excuse to sightsee the Pennsylvania countryside west of the Susquehanna. There's lots of gearhead unusual between the river and Gettysburg, and I always manage to find new roads — asphalt and gravel — each time I venture.

Something I'll have to investigate further: on the west bank of the Susquehanna in Wrightsville I found what looks like an aborted attempt at a J&B Moto showroom. Brian and Rick have fabricated some of my favorite Café Racers, and two of their creations appear to be collecting dust in a storefront on Hellam St. Say it ain't so.

Different States – Different Planets

Look at these flyers. Sometimes a picture really is worth a thousand words. Two pictures? — a million. I've boiled it down to a couple of hundred for you right here.

The Lot one-day event promises, well, a lot. On some level it has something to do with motorcycles. It takes place in Brooklyn (Greenpoint), so many of my fellow Hudson Valley riders are already entering Meserole and Multrie in their google Maps.

The VJMC three-day affair is – as I've written here before – one of motorcycling summer events' best-kept secrets. Promotion borders on the indifferent. So much so that attending may deliver a large dose of irony, which, in a Bizarro World kind of way, may - or may not, who cares? - out-Brooklyn The Lot event. The venue is the White Rose MC Club in Spring Grove, PA (hill climb anyone?) approximately 240 miles southwest(ish) of The Lot semi-soiree, where I'm sure the fun will last past the advertised midnight hour. By that time over at the VJMC, revelers will have retreated to their tents, campers and Econoline vans, visions of vintage Honda Dreams dancing in their heads.
